I've decided to write a bit about my surgery; pre, post and recovery. I've put it under a cut so people who don't want to read it, aren't forced to :)

Wednesday the 7th of July my parents came to my apartment to pick me up and help me get the place ready for a summer without me. After unloading my beloved dog and my stuff at their house we went to MacDonald's for my 'last meal'

Thursday the 8th of July I got up at 5am, as I had to fast 6 hours prior to meeting at the hospital. I ate a small breakfast and went back to bed, but couldn't really fall asleep as I was anxcious about later. At 9:30 we (me and my parents) took off to go to the hospital as I was to be there at 12. Early on the way we stopped at a gas station so I could get a sugary drink (hospital recommandation) and drink it before 10.

We arrived at the hospital a bit early, but were met by a smiling nurse who showed me my room and asked me to put on the hospital clothes (which were extremely huge and very warm). I was weighed and was 2,2 kg / 4,9 lbs under my target weight (YAY!)

My scheduled surgery was at 14:30 (2:30pm) but we quickly discovered that my surgeon was late, due to an emergency surgery. By 15:00 I was hungry, by 15:30 I was starving! But soon after the anesthesiologist came to talk me through the medication and what was going to happen. I told him that I was afraid of the needle, that they where going to put in my hand, but he said that he would spray my hand with some stuff so I wouldn't feel a thing. I had to wait till 16:00 before the surgeon and a nurse came to pick me up I walked down to the OR and laid down on the 'table' and the nurses started chatting, while securing me to the table. The anesthesiologist came in and put the needle in my hand. And after confirming who I was and what they were going to do, they all said "goodnight" and I fell asleep.

By 17:50 I was back in my room, quite some time later than expected. On the inside they use these speciel staples, but each time they stapled me inside I started bleeding, so they had to stitch me up aswell, an that takes some time. I don't remember much from the first 30-50 mins.´. But my mom has told me that I was in so much pain that they had to give me 3 times the normal dosis of morfin to get me to settle down. Around 18:30-18:40 my mind cleared up a bit, but I was still very tired.

Two hours after returning to my room I got out of bed for the first time. I didn't go far, as I was still groggy from the morfin. It wasn't till around 22:00 (10 pm) I started feeling well enough to walk around further than to the bathroom and back to the bed. My parents left around 22:30 and I walked up and down the hallways for some time, before going to bed. (They pump you up with air during surgery and walking helps getting rid of it, as it can hurt quite a bit, if it settles in your shoulders or other joints, before being re-absorbed).

I woke up at 3 feeling nauseous and called for the nurse. She gave me some drug which helped and an extra litre of fluid in intravenously. I spent half an hour walking the hallways, before returning to bed. I woke I few more times during the night, but only to go use the bathroom and to have the line removed as the bag of saline water was empty.

I woke up at 6 as a nurse came to change the band-aids and I got a look at the 5 small surgery wounds, all closed by 3-5 staples, but looking good and clean. I tryied to sleep some more, but wasn't really successful, so I took to wandering the hallways again, untill breakfast was served. I was 0,5dl (0,25 cup) yoghurt, a cup of tea, and a glass of (yukky) protein drink. I managed to eat the yoghurt and drink the tea, but I didn't really care for the protein drink.

Around 9:30 all of the Gastric Bypass patients were gathered and we were told about what pills to take when etc. My parents came around 10 and I had 1dl (0,5 cup) of tomato soup before we left to go home.

Now 1 week + 1 day later I've lost 5,6kg (12 lbs!) Today I started on soft food and next week I'll start on more regular food - just in much smaller amounts :)
