how'd you get that affect?

I'm not really sure. the photograph is about two stops over-exposed. I scanned this from a cotact sheet; on the contact sheet, the potograph is really light so I had to darken it a lot. The smoky effect probably comes from the lack of information in the sky-area. lala.
