I am have lots of anxiety about RJ. The original agreement I had made with his Dad was that RJ would move and live with him starting in 8th grade. Over the last few years I have indicated to him that 9th would be better for RJ academically and maturity wise. And since his Dad didn't take him last xmas. I was came under the false belief that that

Oh man. That sounds awfully hard. :( I don't have answers, but I'm listening.

Make sure that you have a copy of the IEP for RJ, and share that with Dave so he really understands what he's in for. I would also suggest that Dave talk to RJ's counselor/teacher at school so he knows what to expect academically. When RJ goes out for X-mas, maybe that would be a good time to do a school visit. It's entirely possible that there are schools that will be better than others at helping RJ; Dave should be checking on them now to make sure that there are openings at those schools. So asking which school Dave has selected so you can contact them and make sure that RJ's current school keeps them advised of his progress is a good start
