sometimes . . .

Sometimes I wonder what it would be like to be "normal". To have girlfriends that I call and chat with on a regular basis. To have girlfriends with children that I set up play dates with - the kids play and we drink coffee and chat. Having regular girls nights out. Exchanging childcare, babysitter numbers, hell having a babysitter at all. Knowing ( Read more... )

Remember, you do have friends in the SCA who *are* mothers like yourself. In fact, there are some in the household! It may not be "normal" but let's face it... if you were into gaming before the SCA as a primary social world, "normal" doesn't strike me as being your cup of tea. (Personally, I find normal, usually, to be overrated.)

Normal is in the eye of the beholder! sarah_sdr February 17 2010, 23:00:21 UTC
I've got a few "normal" friends here locally that I actually spend time with about once a year or so. Then there's our close friends, who are scattered all over the state and began as a gaming group. It kinda expanded, and as people got jobs, houses, spouses, and kids, we weren't seeing each other very often and all of us were having the same lack-of-socialization issues you mention. Solution: monthly movie nights! The 2nd Saturday of each month is a get-together, with rotating hosting duties. Sometimes there's even a movie, but mostly it's just food and friendship. As a bonus, although we kinda started the kid-thing, now most of our friends also have kids so they get to run around together while we're hanging out.

I highly recommend that approach: identify the people you most relate to, and set up a regular social time with them. It's amazing the difference that makes in my ability to handle the mundane aspects of life!
