RJ is so lucky to have a family as supportive as yours. I know that whatever he has to go through, all of you will be right there with him, helping and encouraging him. No matter what issues he might have, you know that a supportive family is one of the biggest keys to a kid's success.

Labels only mean what we read into them sarah_sdr March 3 2010, 02:09:02 UTC
A diagnosis is just a word that they use to make sure he gets the right stuff to help him learn his best - no more, no less. Kids are more likely to be mean about how he acts/interacts with them than they are a label the adults use. It's really the adults that this will help the most, so they can adjust their expectations and approaches to better meet his needs.

I know it must come as a shock, and certainly it's not what you wanted to hear...but I have to admit to wondering whether this may change the planned move to California. Will his dad really want to deal with all that goes along with having an autistic child? Not that RJ or his needs have changed, but if there's some way this label could help keep him in the supportive environment he has done so well in then I say go for it! Sorry, that's the cynical, practical lawyer in me; I couldn't help it. :p

Agree with the above. WHatever tools you need to get him what is best for him.. use. See what doors it'll open up and what programs become available.

Hit enter too soon.. grr. His road may be tough, but with supportive and loving family.. nothing is insurmountable.

I hope he gets any and all help he needs so that the road ahead isn't quite as tough as it would be without. *HUG*
