The real reason behind the split

From this day on, I'm sorry to say that Busted is over." These were the words from Matt Willis that rocked the nation on 14th January, and Busted fans around the world are still trying to come to terms with the shock news.
We all knew Charlie Simpson had his side-project band Fightstar, but nobody really imagined it would spell the end for Britains most popular band quite sonn. In january 2004 Charlie had even talked about his future plans for Busted. "No one is planning to leave," Charlie told reporters. "We've got loads of plans. I do have a side project but it doesn't affect anything with Busted."

But, this week. Peter Robinson, who the lads chose to write two of their official books, told Sneak about Charlies secret worries and they date right back to the creation of Busted.

Emabarassed
According to Peter, Charlie's always been torn between being Busted and his love for more alternative rock music. "I was the first person to interview the boys and I think Charlie's been frustrated the whole way through because of the music he's always been into," says Peter. "While Matt and James (Bourne) would say they're into bands like Blink- 182, Charlie would reel off bands I'd hardly heard of." He also recalls how Charlie would often cringe about what he'd have to do with Busted. "He seemed embarrassed by the things he would be asked to do in pop magazine photoshoots," says Peter. But he insists that Charlie did like being in the band for a time. "He loved Busted and appreciated the music on a level, but it wasn't what he's ever listen to at home." It's now obvious that Charlie wasn't in the band of his dreams, but Busted's massive success must have made it hard for him to leave, especially when they had a tour of America lined up for the future.

Nightmares
During their gruelling US tour in August 2004, poor Charlie revealed he was suffering from nightmares, in which he was shot, stabbed and electrocuted. (how horrible) "I dreamed I was in a cab going to my new house. There were some dodgy- looking guys in the street and as I handed £20 to the cab driver, the window smashed and a gun was held to my face . The blood always felt warm," he said. At the time, Charlie also complained that his workload was starting to affect his health. "I got on the scales this morning and I've lost a stone in the space of a month," he said. But there was one thing that Charlie liked about America: "I loved going to gigs without getting recognised. Sometimes in the UK people see me in the audience and give me grief, but no one in the US knew us." Could this new taste of privacy have given him the push he needed to leave a hugely successful band and start again from scratch?

Choice
Days before the lads called their emergency press conference, Charlie put the final nail in the Busted coffin when he told rock mag Kerrang! that he'd choose Fightstar over Busted. "If that situation came up, at the end of the day, my passion lies in Fightstar's music," he said. "Fightstar is what I want to do and so, if I have to choose, there's not even a question. It's not about the money. The money means nothing to me."

Now, as the dust settles and fans struggle to cometo terms with the situation, Busted biography Peter thinks Charlie had to follow his heart. "Charlie admits that Fightstar probably never will be the biggest and the best, but it came to a point where schedules for the bands would clash and he had to make a choice, so you can't really criticise him for that."

Sad as we are that it's all over for Busted, Sneak and thousands of the bands fans respect Charlies brave decision.
