Jealousy is a funny thing. I sure as hell can't figure it out. I don't classify it as an emotion that creatures need for survival, so I wonder when it developed in humans.
accccccccccccccctually, in my anthropology human evolution class we were studying these observations of primate behavior, and there was a whole section on what's essentially jealousy, which is a staple to primates that live in bi-sexual groups (like groups that are composed of both males and females). i'm totally an ass. sorry bout that.
Jealousy itself happens when the reptilian brain sends messages of threat and challange forward to the frontal brain. So yeah, the foundation of jealousy is primative, but it's the processing of this input that makes it so human. Humans get stuck in trauma - unlike the animal, which can (often must) shake off trauma and move on with normal life.
