Po-faced meaning solemn. I suspect they weren't used to going to Opera and thought it had to be recieved with suitable respect - no smiling allowed! I didn't get the impression they were bored, and they certainly applauded enthusiastically.

Well, I know Porgy & Bess is a real opera and therefore there's nothing wrong with singing it in the same way I would any other operatic song (although I feel freer to pull the rhythm about a bit because the music is so jazzy in feel), but I think operatic type voices always sound a bit daft singing show tunes and non-operatic repertoire in general. Of course the important thing is whether the audience likes to hear it, but it makes me feel as if I'm doing someone who's trained as a jazz or musical theatre singer out of work, as if the operatic style is somehow superior.
