I, like many authors before me, have figured out the secret to marketable novel writing. Sadism. You must punish your characters every inch of the way so that the reader craves redemption. Do not give it until the last ten pages. You will be rewarded.

For those of my contemporaries who haven't read it: procure a copy of Alan Moore's "Watchmen" on Trade Paperback. Even if you don't normally read comics you should enjoy it - plus it will prepare you for 2009's movie adaptation.
