The US Steel position is in The Valley as the employees call it. The Valley being at any of the three plants associated with Mon Valley Works. These consist of Irvin Works (near Allegheny County Airport), Clairton Works, and Edgar Thompson Plant (Braddock).
Ostensibly, it also includes Fairless Works out in Fairless Hills because FW is too small of a plant to be on its own and MVW is the nearest facility.
Update for TF position: Also, since I'm here. I have a phone call with the hiring manager this afternoon at 4:30.
Update, major risksol_blackstarDecember 29 2009, 02:43:30 UTC
I informed STI, the contract firm I was going through for the US position, I need 10 days to decide if I want the position. This came after 2 weeks of emails and phone calls with the offer never wavering from 23.50/hr with benefits. That would come out to about 48.8k/year.
At 4:30, STI informed me US Steel doesn't want to pay over 20.50/hr or 42.6k/yr. The reason for the hold: the interview with TF on Monday. I realize 6k isn't a lot of money, but 42.6k is low for the position. Also add in the fact that TF's position, if offered would be between 50 and 55k. I also have one other opportunity I'm passively pursuing until Monday with salary expectations between 55 and 60k.
I know not taking the position is a major risk, but its one I had to take. I'm not desperate enough to sell my soul back to US Steel.
