HISTORY: Late nineteenth-century China. Modern in its great cities, yet traditional in its provinces, one of which Linali's family belonged to. The Li's led a peacefully normal life, but in her world lurked a supernatural terror called AKUMA. These machinated monsters fed on the souls of the dead and despair of the living, rampaging and slaughtering countries. China was no exception. Linali was barely five when she lost her home and her parents. Fleeing with her brother, the two kept out of harm's way and tried to readjust to life after the tragedy, but such an ending was not one of Linali's blessings. At age six, she was discovered as a conformer to Innocence and was soon taken away by the Dark Religious Organization, a syndicate under the Vatican, as a candidate for the continuous war between AKUMA and humans ( ... )

At age sixteen, Allen Walker joins their ranks. His arrival became the catalyst of a series of events that slowly brought the Exorcists closer to the core of the war: the Millenium Earl, father of AKUMA. After Rewinding Town, where she and Allen met the Noah Road, she was placed on the team to find the missing General Cross. Together with Allen, Rabi, and Bookman--and along the way, Aleistar Crowley--this mission took her through China and onward to Japan by ship. (Note: without Allen; he was assaulted by a Noah and was taken in by the Asia Branch. They could not wait for him ( ... )

After that, Linali was put on the team that was to search and retrieve General Marian Cross, who was las reported in China. They do not stay there long, since Cross had gone on a ship to Edo, though it was said that that ship had sunken into a sea of poison. Not allowing that to stop them, they follow him; however, before they could embark, a swarm of AKUMA attack the port city. Although the Exorcists win, there was great loss: Suman, another Exorcist who had turned into a Fallen (an Apostle whose synchro dropped to zero and yet forced invocation), had to be killed, and Allen went missing. Duty subjugating emotion, the team carried on to Japan. During the voyage, the Exorcists were yet again confronted by AKUMA; Linali resolved to defeat the Level 3 by herself, but winning meant she had to push her synchro rate beyond her maximum potential. With the force of a meteor, Linali destroyed the Level 3 and though she would have died, her Innocence saved her at the price of remaining disfunctional until the end of their mission. Despite all this, Linali is still a teenager with a teenager's concerns and capriciousness. Her sensitiveness is frequently mistaken for weakness, for her tears are easily summoned whether it is out of joy, sadness, or fear. Though she dislikes self-sacrifice, she could turn around and do something reckless herself. She learned to suffer on her own, but she hates being alone. Even now she wakes up in the middle of the night and runs to somebody's side, be it her brother or a fellow Exorcist. However, she would sooner swallow her pain than become a burden, and she absolutely hates being useless, which is why she is always active. (She'll often occupy the kitchen, cooking with Jerry and making chocolate cake--a favorite of hers. Food is an excellent remedy, isn't it ( ... )

HISTORY: When we first meet Neku, he's in the middle of Shibuya, Japan. His first words are 'shut up!', establishing a tense relationship already. He explains his views on keeping everyone not in his own little world away. "I have my values--so you can keep yours, alright?" However, in the next moment or so, we find him standing in the middle of the street, without a clue to where he is. He finds a pin in his hand, and upon clasping it, it activates--suddenly, he's able to hear every single thought of every single person in the section of Shibuya he's in. Once he's able to deactivate it, his phone rings--oh, hey, junk mail. Delete. ... but it's still there ( ... )

And who is his partner but the actual Composer of the Reaper's Game, Joshua Kiryuu. During the start of this week, he scans, and finds that he can (in a matter of speaking) scan Joshua's mind--but it flashes back to scenes of Neku's death. The 'trust your partner' mantra is properly threatened--why would Joshua be there, watching him die? Was he the one who killed him? This simple fact makes it obvious as to why Neku just can't seem to trust him. As the week progresses, Neku's able to scan every day and gets a bit farther into his own death scene, making Neku trust him less and less (into negative numbers). Beat comes back during this week, under orders from the Conductor, to erase Neku and Joshua. He comes close to every time, but never finishes, exclaiming that they're too weak (and therefore it'd be just pitiful to try and fight) and dashing off. Until the very last day and the last battle of the week, Neku's convinced that Joshua is his killer. Shortly beforehand, however, he receives an extension of the flashbacks in Joshua--and ( ... )

PERSONALITY: Neku isn't exactly your normal protagonist. While most are characterized as happy-go-lucky and eager to make new friends, Neku has an incredibly hardened exterior that shows itself the first time we meet him. He's coarse, and keeps to himself, pushing others away. When Shiki points out that she's his friend, he insists that she's not--going so far as to say "No one's my friend. Least of all you. I only stay with you to survive." Neku claims that friends are useless; that they only get close to you and then they tear your life apart by making you care about them and exposing your true self. By the time the first week is over, though, it's melted--and Neku has become a new person. He doesn't turn a new leaf entirely, but things have changed. He knows that listening sometimes helps him more than the person talking, and to not let his emotions explode so easily. He's learned to trust your partner. Like he himself says; he used to be detached from the rest of the world and believed that he should only live for himself, care ( ... )

Seven months after they first arrived on Serenity, Simon suggested a raid St. Lucy's hospital on the planet Ariel, while there he intended on using one of the machines to figure out what the Academy had done to River. At first River did not want to go, after all she hates hospital and in order to get into the hospital, they had to be dead for only a few moments. She eventually agreed and they got in and while Mal and Zoe stole a load of medical supplies, River, Simon and Jayne went to find out what had happened to River's mind. And they found out, but they were betrayed by Jayne and captured by the Alliance ( ... )

She is basically a poster child for psychological disorders, the damage done to her in the Academy having driven her into an almost constant state of psychosis. Paranoid schizophrenia, PTSD, and thought disorder would be the first things one would notice if they were versed in psychology, she has experienced much trauma during her stay at the Academy and it reflects quite obviously through her behavior. It meshed with her genius making it come out twisted and strange, often being unable to be understood by anyone by River. But despite being deeply troubled by her past trauma, and being generally dangerous, she prefers to play games and pretend she is a sane girl when she is lucid enough too, because in all reality that is what she really wants; to be normal, safe with her brother and not to be a danger to those around her ( ... )

THIRD PERSON: It was the lack of hum from Serenity's engine that woke her, sitting upright and alert, wide eyes looking around frantically. This was not the ship, she knew this much, but was it a hallucination? Or was she still dreaming? River could not tell, sometimes her hallucinations and reality merged into one another, mixing in brilliant colors spinning and weaving, until they started to sing in a voice like her own. Speaking in riddles of things that did not make sense, but at the same time made all the sense in the world. And no one listened.

"Simon?"

River stepped carefully over dead bodies, silently, like she was playing some game of hide and seek and she must not be caught. Voices, images, screams and feelings all playing in her head as she walked, the girl cringed and shied away the best she could, the screams of a mother begging for her child's life to be spared dancing in her ears, the sound of a blade being rammed into her chest. River didn't like it here, it was noisy, loud, they talked at her when she did ( ... )
