It might well mean that. I'm still waiting to hear from harvard, berkeley and stanford -- those and MIT have been kind of tied as my first choices in my mind, with chicago as a close... second? fifth? Anyway. I think MIT is the school that holds the most mystique for me. My mom went there, I've grown up hearing stories about it, when I was a young teenager I used to perform in Gilbert & Sullivan operettas there a lot, people would joke that I was part of the class of '04 (it was kind of funny in 1995). Actually, when I woke up this morning I was really grumpy and sleep deprived, and I managed to drag myself out of bed by deciding to check my email. I felt kind of silly for checking it so often, but I thought, "Who knows, maybe there'll be an email from frikkin' MIT telling me I got in. Hah." And there was. So that almost seems like a sign. But yeah, I guess mystique isn't really the best criterion to take into account when making these types of decisions. So we'll see.
How splendid! They do have one of the most mathalicious programs in the world. Perhaps we'll meet again in Boston, as it seems that I might well end up there in the next few years.
Clair (fugitivethought) is going to medical school in August, and Tufts is one of the more likely possibilities at this point in the process. I will presumably follow her out to wherever she ends up, sooner or later.
I've only been in choruses (lead roles were kind of reserved for actual MIT students, so maybe that will change now!), but I've been in: The Mikado; Utopia, Ltd.; Patience; Princess Ida; and The Grand Duke. I also played drums for The Sorceror. I was obsessed with G&S when I was eleven or so, and lately the obsession's been on its way back. I think my favorites are Iolanthe and Utopia, Ltd., although I also tend to be quite partial toward whichever one I've seen the most recently. It's funny how Sullivan was always wanting to move away from the savoy and write real music, sacred music. Because when I hear Iolanthe's "suppliant" song it just seems so holy, like god itself just opened up an interdimensional portal into sullivan's brain and plopped the song in.
I also think Utopia has the funniest pair of scenes in the canon, the ones between Scaphio(?) and Phantis(?) when they argue over Princess Zara.
I went through something not too different--heavy G&S interest around 11 or 12, which ebbed but revived later. Utopia and Grand Duke are pretty obscure--I don't think I've ever heard them, not even isolated numbers.
For flat-out gorgeous Sullivan music, the a cappella "Strange Adventure" from Yeomen of the Guard is hard to beat. I agree, Iolanthe is terrific, and I like Patience, too. Gilbert was a terrible old Tory, poking fun at Swinburne and Wilde for their artiness and affectation, but it's very clever mockery. Oh, did you see Topsy Turvy? Good movie, I thought.

Really though, I think they'd be lucky to have you.
