Hey kids. I'm back in newton, and planning to move to cambridge in a few days. I had my first day of orientation at MIT today. It mostly consisted of various staff members standing in front of us and saying, "It's okay. You can do it. Don't be scared. You weren't admitted by accident," over and over. but what happened to the viper?

i had a friend who smuggled a little monkey onto a plane in the 1970s. he had on a fur coat and put the monkey in his coat, and thought he had it concealed pretty well, until the stewardess looked at him funny and it turned out the monkey stuck its head out the collar and was grimacing at people. but they let him keep the monkey with him.

Sounds like a good monkey. As for the viper, presumably it was stolen by someone who thought the box seemed to contain something valuable. Upon hearing the story my mother was concerned that the thief may have endangered the passengers by opening the box and accidentally letting the snake escape on the plane, but the woman decided to risk not saying anything for fear of getting in trouble. It must have been sad to one minute have a pet and then the next minute have to mourn the pet in silence while outwardly pretending it never existed. I like to think the snake got away, hid harmlessly on the plane, disembarked with the other passengers when the plane landed, and went on to live a rich and full life. But that's basically what I also like to think about Amelia Earhardt, and I guess we'll never know for sure in either case.

Heh, thanks. It always startles me when people call me cute because I don't really think of myself that way, but I appreciate it.
