Oooh, I really really like this--Marcus's understanding and resentment of his dependence on Esca, all the conflicted feelings both of them have, the unclear motivations. Fabulous.

(And yes, Marcus would definitely worship the typical Roman gods as well, even if his primary devotion is to Mithras. :-) )

Awesome insight into Marcus's headspace! I wish we could see more of them both with your eyes :)

Oh, this is loveliness!! I adore how tense and fraught everything is while they're in the wilds, just Esca v. Marcus. Like they're both so magnetically drawn to each other, but they each hold such strong reservations about each other, since everything they've known thus far would tell them not to trust the other. The inner struggles they both go through are so well-displayed here, and yet subtle and understated.

Loved this!!

I love this - I was hooked as soon as I got to this line:

'It’s like the difference between an enemy and a friend; both have a mouth and a face, arms and legs, and eyes, but one would rarely mistake the first for the latter.'

And then it just got better and better! Great insight into the dynamic between them, and how it changes with their changing circumstances.

Wow. This is great. (I just said that out loud as I finished, which is a good sign.) I love the tension between then, something that keeps going back and forth between trust and mistrust, and it gets more intense every time. I love it.
