Zach can feel the breeze from the ocean and the soft sand underneath his feet. Cody laughs over the sound of the waves as Shaun chases him across the beach and they splash through the water. He can see Gabe and Tori both stretched out on blankets on the sand near the SUV. They look like they’re napping from this distance but he knows better than that; he can see the way they watch the cliffs, keeping an eye out for anything out of the ordinary. It’s still early in the day; if they’re lucky they’ll have a few hours of peace before they have to move on.
Waves crash against the beach and Zach’s hands twitch. He would love nothing more than to be able to have his board in his hands and to head out into the water. It won’t happen, though. But as he closes his eyes he can imagine it and a sense of peace takes him over. It’s not the same though; it’s merely a mockery of what it really feels like.
He opens his eyes and stares out into the blue, contemplatively.
Arms wrap around his waist and he jumps. Zach is startled; he hadn’t even heard Shaun come up and that’s just a little disturbing.
“This isn’t a time for worrying,” Shaun says, pressing his lips against the back of Zach’s neck. “We need to enjoy this while we still can.”
“I know,” sighs Zach, leaning back against his chest. He tilts his head to the side and offers his neck.
Shaun responds by placing a kiss there before giving a soft bite.
Zach laughs softly and squirms away. The grip on his waist only loosens enough to let Zach spin around. Concern is obvious on Shaun’s face He grins up at him in reassurance and leans forward pressing their lips together in an easy kiss.
When he pulls back the concern has eased away from his face but there’s still worry in his eyes as one of Shaun’s hands slide up to brush the side of his neck, right over the spot he’d bitten down on. “I love you,” he tells Shaun.
The smile on his face is real as Shaun tightens his arms, pulling him into a hug. “I love you too,” he mumbles into Zach’s neck. “We’re going to be okay, you know?”
“I know,” responds Zach. “Always.”
Shaun pulls back slightly, smiling softly. “Good.” He presses a kiss to the side of Zach’s head and just relishes the feeling of Zach in his arms, safe and okay.
There’s a long suffering sigh and they both turn. Cody is standing there, a half formed abandoned sandcastle a few feet away. “Are you two done now?” Cody asks, shifting his weight from foot to foot.
Zach nods, smiling, as Shaun buries his face in Zach‘s neck and laughs, his whole body shaking with it.
“Good,” Cody replies, taking Zach’s hand and pulling him away. “Then you can help me finish my sandcastle.”
It’ll only be a few hours before the stench of others begin to fill the air. Until then, Zach’s going to enjoy this piece of happiness and normality while it lasts.
