I abhor misspelling as much as the next person, so I think that spellcheckers are a brilliant and useful invention. So what's wrong with letting students use them? Seriously, how often are they going to find themselves writing in a situation with no spellchecker available

My favorite approach in this domain is the professor who returns anything with a spelling or gramatical error marked "Unacceptable. Correct and resubmit." No penalty, but no interest in grading the work until the student has demonstrated the courtesy of submitting something without egregious syntactic errors, so that the real work can begin.
