jonghyun is born to an office worker and a housewife. it's a normal household in every sense of the word. he has a normal childhood, with normal friends; he doesn't have any exciting stories to tell about his younger years, just the same stories anyone else would have. his grades go up, his grades go down, they waver in between. he grains friends, he looses friends, they drift apart and come together. it's all really boring, he'll sigh.
he takes to making up stories in high school, when his family moves from the coast at incheon to the depths of seoul. no one knows him here, so jonghyun never takes friends home and makes up stories about abusive parents and running away and dead mothers and workaholic parents and the circus and secret government programs. its endless, and no one knows what to believe. its his composition teacher that takes him in hand and directs him to putting his imagination to a different purpose than to torment his peers.
sometimes, jonghyun wonders what could've happened in his life if he had decided to do something else instead. he imagines jjong, v. party, who loves alcohol and attends every party. or jjong, v. song, who decides to become a singer and ends up in a five member boy group. or jjong, v. bad, who rides a motorcycle and gets into fights. they're fun to think about, to write about. the first piece of real proper writing he finishes is the story of himself, and all the himselves he could've been, the story of a boy named dennis that gets to meet all he ever would or could be. it's a trippy novel, he's still working on getting it published.
there's no big fanfare to attending yonsei. he had his choice of a handful of schools, but yonsei was close to home and it wasn't overwhelmingly big or uncomfortably small. it's a school, and it has a good lit department, and that's all he wants. and in his favor, his grandfather happens to die right after his freshman year, leaving him with a sizeable inheritance that does into his education. its enough that he can comfortably go to school for at least a decade without having to get a job. (and it's not that he's happy he died, or anything like that, it's just. they were never close.)
joining bct isn't really an interesting story either. he happened upon their table during rush week, the guys mannin the table were cool, it seemed like fun. jonghyun really had to grow into the fraternity mindset, but now four years later, he's glad for the group of guys he's come to think of as his own personal family.
graduation? it's here and there. it's not as scary now as it was when he first started university: mostly because he's less worried about graduation and more worried about getting accepted into the graduate program for literature. for all that he wants to just spend his time writing, the "real world" sees strange and foreign to him now, and he kind of just wants to stay hidden inside yonsei's campus for as long as possible. or at least until he gets his second novel finished and his first publishes. hopefully. maybe.
jonghyun: short legs, a big temper, lots of patience, fighting a war against ramen, a long torso, a big imagination, the ability to laugh at any situation, a fragile ego, pancakes over waffles, acts big and bad but is honestly a big baby, can't drive cars, books, rain, moonlight picnics, bad study habits but good grades, beaches at sunset, dew on leaves, cannot be left in the kitchen alone ever, biting fingernails, wants tattoos but afraid of needles, runs three miles in the morning, strangely apathetic, his mind is the best playground, ketchup on eggs, romance movies, poems about disaster, remembering to take plates to the kitchen but not cups, waiting on True Love, unashamed virgin, secretly liked being forced to dress in drag for school festivals because having smooth legs is awesome.
