Band
There are times when Castiel is aware he isn’t actually part of the Winchesters' band of brothers and that he probably never will be. Sam and Dean have a habit of talking around him even when he was right there in the room with them. It annoys him because usually they are discussing some piece of information that he brought them and then excluding him from their plans. He feels, sometimes, that he is just a hammer to the Winchesters and ever since he became weakened he isn’t even all that useful to them anymore.
He is aware these are foolish thoughts. He was included in the family portrait Bobby took of them all. That was a clear sign he was seen as family in the eyes of the Winchesters. He also knows that to the Winchesters, family is not just a matter of blood relations. They take in many people from all sorts of walks of life, though admittedly most are hunters. He knows that for all their protesting, they have adopted the Prophet. Why else would they run off to help him when they didn’t even know what sort of danger he was in? He knows that he has become part of their family too.
But… he misses his family and his brothers. It is impossible for him not to. After Lucifer’s rebellions the angels had closed ranks, becoming tighter, closer because they were the last ones, the last of the faithful sons and daughters. His family was everything to him for thousands of years. Every day he is aware they are out to kill him, that they are against him and it hurts. That is probably why he looks to the Winchesters for a family to belong to again.
Without a band of brothers, Castiel is quite lost in the world.
