Jesus

I know Jesus is the only person who will never disappoint me
the only person who will love me NO MATTER what
the only friend who wants to spend as much time with me as i do with him(even more)
I need to stop putting so much faith in "friends"
Jesus is the only savior

Parties, drinking, beaches, shopping malls, and sleeping in are all terms normally associated with the stereotypical high school student's spring break. I am told that spring break is a time for focusing on having a good time and hanging out. I decided to allot my time differently this spring break. I decided to undertake a short term missions trip to Los Angeles with my church, Foothills Christian Fellowship. We would be going to the "Dream Center", which is basically consisted of a few hospital buildings which were purchased by a church organization. We would be going there to assist in the execution of a few of their outreaches to the community, which number over 200. We would be leaving March 22 and returning March 26. I was unsure of what to expect, although I knew we would spend our time there volunteering and helping the less fortunate ( ... )

While up at the Dream Center my heart broke. I was distraught for all of these people I saw and felt their pain, their anguish, their sorrow. We saw people smoking crackpipes, shooting up, some of us saw prostitutes being abused by their pimps, we saw teenagers living on the streets, runaways who had nothing. While talking to some of these people, I was blown away by the realization that all they wanted was love, somone to talk to, a friend. So ofen we neglect the less fortunate, assuming that everything that has happened to them is their own fault and justify the clearness of our consciences by assuring ourselves that they just want money for drugs or alcohol. I used to think this way too. One of the days at the Dream Center, a group of about 8 of us helped with the ministry called "Metro-Kidz" which is a sidewalk sunday school where they drive out big trucks with pull-down stages and speakers to really ghetto areas of Los Angeles like South Central, Watts, etc. to perform short bible lessons and hang out with the kids. It ( ... )

On Thursday, March 24 the Dream Center hosted an event called "Coffee House" which was a place where homeless and runaways could come and eat, drink, take showers, and watch groups perform at the Dream Center. I met a man named Raul from El Salvador. he was around early 30's and was living on the streets. I was talking to him for a while in spanish because he didn't understand ANY english. It was nighttime and really cold around there and I noticed he didn't have any kind of sweater or jacket on so I asked him, " Why don't you have a sweater or jacket on? It's really cold around here," to which he replied, "Because I don't own any." My heart sank at the realization that this man, who was living on the streets didn't even own a jacket. Honestly, how many sweaters, jackets, etc. do we all own that we never wear, that we don't care about? I know that I personally have a lot that don't mean anything to me. So, I took off the jacket I was wearing and asked him if he could receive this gift from me. He nodded his head and ( ... )
