A little about heaven an' hell

There is a great number of misconceptions that I have noticed concerning about ( Read more... )

While this is certainly an area of catholic theology that has flaws, I think we can agree that a kid stealing a lolly pop is not the same as Hitler or Stalin commiting mass murder; although both seperate you from God, one is going to take you away from God a lot faster and a lot farther than the other. So I think the Catholic distinction is a designation of different areas of a spectrum, if you will, rather than two seperate things.

"I think we can agree that a kid stealing a lolly pop is not the same as Hitler or Stalin commiting mass murder.."

I don't agree.

Sin is equal, and all sins set you below the bar of perfection. Rather than trying to prove that all sin is either equal or inequal, think of just two categories, Holy and unholy. When we take part in our first sinful act, we're below the bar of perfection, therefore all humans are equal in imperfection. We're all equally distant from God, except those that have Jesus. He bridges the gap.

I overuse commas.

Stealing a lollypop and mass murder are not the same deeds but they are both sin. Of sin the Bible says "For the wages of sin is death" (Rom. 6:23). The Bible does not say that the wages of some sins (mortal) is death, and the wages of other "lesser" sins (venial) would be a prolonged stay in purgatory. There is no distinction made between different sins having different effects on the state of salvation of people.
