Morning Angel
For the longest time, Jiro’s sole focus in life was survival. Forming attachments was not conducive to that kind of lifestyle, so he’d kept to himself for longer than he cared to remember. Turning his heart to ice had seemed the only way to keep from disappointment…and for a while he’d been okay with it. Being a lone wolf wasn’t the worst thing in the world, but then he started feeling like he was missing something.
He hadn’t realized exactly what that was until the day he met the woman of his dreams: Yuri Aso. The strong, beautiful Fangire Slayer swept into his life, melting his icy heart in the process and making him realize that not only could he love: but so strongly that it scared him.
Sometimes, he feared his entire life with her was a dream that when he woke up in the morning to find her lying beside him, he’d close his eyes again and then reopen them to make certain she was real.
This particular morning, he had to do that a couple of times, because what was on his mind was something that would change not only his life forever, but her's.
Yuri always looked impossibly beautiful to him when she slept. With her lovely features peaceful, breathing even and long dark hair fanning across the pure white of the pillows, she created an angelic vision that seemed like something out of a fairytale, particularly with the soft glow of morning light washing over her.
Jiro stared at her for a few moments more, transfixed, before rolling over quietly and reaching into the nightstand drawer, where he’d been hiding the box containing an elegant diamond ring for a few weeks now.
Sighing, he sat up in bed; opening the box and gazing at the ring for a long moment, watching it catch the sunlight and glint cheerfully. Slowly, a smile crossed the wolf’s handsome face and he shifted to his side, taking the ring out and then, as carefully as possible, sliding it onto Yuri’s left ring finger. She uttered a quiet, contented sound as his fingers brushed her hand and Jiro’s smile grew before he leaned down and pressed a kiss to the finger bearing the ring, and then moved so he could kiss her on the forehead. “Yuri…wake up,” he murmured, caressing her hair. “There’s something you need to see.”
The woman he considered his mate shifted against him, her skin brushing against his and making him bite back a moan, but he controlled the urge to pin her into the pillows. This was a moment he’d been rehearsing in his mind for a while now and he wasn’t about to mess it up because of how much he desired her.
Yawning, Yuri blinked open her dark eyes before gazing sleepily at him, warming Jiro’s heart and causing him to lean in and press a tender kiss to her lips. “Good morning.”
“Morning,” she mumbled sleepily. “What was it you wanted me to see?”
His grin lit up the room more than the sunlight did and he nuzzled at her affectionately before whispering: “Look at your finger,”
Eyebrows arching curiously, Yuri glanced down, and immediately her heart started beating erratically when she found herself peering at a beautiful, sparkling diamond ring. “Jiro?” she breathed, locking eyes with him, unable to believe it.
He took a deep breath before taking her hand within his and speaking softly. “Yuri…for as long as I can remember I’ve been alone…and it’s been my choice. I was afraid of letting anyone in, because I was scared that if I did, eventually I’d lose them. I didn’t want to risk the pain that could cause. Then…I met you. And everything changed. I want to take the risk now. I want a life: a home, a family…but most of all I want you. I want you to be the one to share it with me,” he paused, taking another breath before saying the words she’d been longing to hear. “I love you, Yuri Aso…will you marry me?”
For a long, almost painful moment, she couldn’t find the right words to say, but then, at last, her lips curved into the most breathtaking smile Jiro had ever seen and she framed his face between her hands before whispering. “Yes…yes of course, I’ll marry you.”
Elated, Jiro drew Yuri into his arms, instigating a passion-filled kiss that made pleasant sparks shoot up her spine and, in response, she dragged him down on top of her, the kiss deepening as she giggled: “Yes…a thousand times, yes, my love. That was an easy question.”
Jiro smiled against her mouth, nipping and teasing at her lips. “And that was the perfect answer.”
