Penguin, Catwoman, Poison Ivy -- Oh, my!

Vowed to post to LJ more? Wondering what to write? Well, watch the premiere of a new superhero TV series and wonder no more!

First, some running commentary:

Aw, the young Catwoman is so cute! Of course she's a pickpocket with her own alley cat. They really went with the new art. I like it! It looks really modern. Fun goggle hat.

Ahhhh, Batman, yay! ..Oh, right, now his parents die. Sad face.

James Gordon, young and hot! Wow! ..Is that BARBARA Gordon?! No, wait, that's her mom. The resemblance is striking! Your daughter is going to have flaming red hair, missy!

Aw, it's Poison Ivy as a little (abused) girl. Wow. That makes sense. Cute and fierce!

That moment when Gordon is told he either shoots Penguin or they both get shot: shitting his pants and wanting to run back to Metropolis.

I like the style of the show. It's gritty and dark and a bit fantastical. It has very modern sensibilities but with the aesthetics of a bygone era. Could end up being a comic book version of Mad Men -- 1950s chic but with social progress.

The ending with Penguin makes a lot of sense, too. Now he's an outcast, shut out of the Gotham social structure for 20 years while his waddling limp hardens and he befriends penguins along the shores of the Arctic ocean the Gotham river. Then when he makes his re-appearance.. watch out!

OH! I almost forgot The Riddler. He was so cute in a super dorky way. I kinda want to date him, haha. I hope we see a lot more of him!

Final thoughts:

I liked it. I like James Gordon and that storyline. It's like a cop show on steroids! The Pengiun storyline really worked. I wonder if we'll see him around again. Oh, I LOVE the strong women on the show. Jada Pinkett is awesome, Cat...girl is interesting. Barbara was a bit simpering at first for my taste, but I suppose they were being all romantic, so it's allowable? She was pretty kick-ass when Renee Montoya showed up.

OH WAIT. WAS THAT LESBIAN BACK HISTORY THEY WERE HINTING AT or was I just picking up on the very obvious subtext. See? Classic, mildly fantastical setting with modern sensibilities. I like it!

AND. Where my comic geeks at? WHAT IS RENEE MONTOYA DOING THERE? Shouldn't she be like 12 years old, a contemporary of Bruce Wayne's? She's the same age in the show as she is in the comic with a grown-up Batman. Maybe they wanted more strong female characters (whoo!) and pilfered her from the current comics? Or maybe she'll end up having a daughter who she also names Renee (like Barbara names her daughter Barbara, duh) who happens to look exactly like her?

Was it wrong that I was shipping Renee with James when she first showed up? Especially since Renee ends up now being James' romantic rival? INTERESTING. *drums fingers*

Hmm. Anyway. My fangirl brain has exploded open, and I like it. What did you think?

How appropriate! I even have the perfect icon to use. :)

Oh, and now for the age-old question: What city does Gotham represent? I always thought Chicago or some midwestern U.S. city. My brother was convinced for years it was Toronto. (How Canadian!) I know it's supposed to be NYC, but what real-life city did you always think Gotham was?

gotham, batman, tv
