I am entirely in love with Penguin's Great Ideas series after having stumbled upon them at the Henry Miller Library a few weeks ago. They are slim volumes, usually no more than 100 pages. I've worked my way through the first series and am designing an interdisciplinary course around them that will be taught by by three teachers from english, ( Read more... )

Wow, I like the designs a lot, too! Thanks for sharing.

I haven't ever seen 'The Wire'. What is it about?

OK, The Wire is hard to explain! I heard about it for quite some time before being convinced by someone I have a crush on that is a more of a 'visual novel', which is what sold me. I mean, the premise is that it's an HBO show about detectives, which sounds painful. But really and truly it's a brilliant 'portrait of a dying American city', Baltimore. Each season deals with a different aspect of the city: drugs, police, schools, politics;, in which no clear winners emerge. But give it a try! It takes a while to get into, as it's not very episodic in nature. But I've really never seen anything else like it...

Just about to tuck into Season #4, have #5 on the way! I LITERALLY know no one who enjoys The Wire -- what the fuck's wrong with that???

Hope you enjoy #2; that was my favourite ... #3 is pretty damn awesome too!

Ciao!

I just finished season 4 about ten minutes ago...probably the best so far, followed by season 1 and 3. 2 actually almost lost me...I hated most of the actors on that season, they were sort of over-the-top acting-wise and incongruous. But yeah, I've forced everyone around me to watch it. Seriously unprecedented television!

If you're watching "Generation Kill" on HBO right now, you'll see quite a few of the actors of various series in it! I recommend checking it out ... peace!

o, i love these too! penguin has some amazingly pretty lines -- i think they have some nature ones, and a "great romances" series too. it's too bad these never seem to be in actual bookstores.

I'll have to check them out...I found the entire Great Ideas series at the Henry Miller Library in Big Sur, which is essentially in the middle of nowhere.
