Olympics will eat your life

Instead of working on help_haiti fic or kizuna_exchange fic or even that-fic-that-will-remain-epic-only-in-my-head I have been watching Olympics. A lot. Like stumbling home at 8, turning on the tv and watching men of questionable sexuality twirl and jump (with twirls!) until midnight. This is also bad for RL. Good lord is it bad for RL ( Read more... )

This reminds me of the first time I met Mer (acchikocchi)in RL. The 2008 Eurovision Song Contests was on the TV that night, including the Russian entry using Plushenko on rollerblades as a dancer. Mer told me all about The Epic Skating Story of Newcomer Protege v. Master. It was very entertaining XD

In 2010 I'm mostly shipping Johnny Weir/Rufus Wainwright ^___^ though I love the fic-friendly factor of Weir sharing a suite with Plushenko's ex.

(...you should work on k_x XD)

(...I try but these Russians are so pushy XD)

I love Yagudin! Winter and The Man In the Iron Mask remains my favourite short and long programs even till now. I found Daisuke's footwork really reminiscent of Yagudin's actually, and loved his SP utterly. One of the best SPs I've ever seen.

akdf I love the Yagudin/Plushenko rivalry. It was... so epic... and I was pretty obsessed XD

You turn around, and there's no one behind you, and no one is in sight ahead. (can I switch over to obsessive Akame fangirl mode here and say that this is what I feel about Akame's relationship most times?)

THIS. Now I know why I was so obsessed...

And it's really, really true. I couldn't quite believe it when I watched Plushenko's free skate. He was so... half-hearted and his jumps were all over the place. All I could think of was that if Alexei was still here, he would have worked so much harder.

Also, have some Lambiel/Weir. I have this urge to ship them now ;)

I wholeheartedly agree. Olympics will eat your life. :(

I agree about Daisuke's SP. Wonderful choreography and he was just so on that night. Actually, I agree with everything in your comment.

I really, really miss Yagudin :( He and Plushenko pushed each other and, as a consequence, figure skating further and further. It was an exciting time. Now he's gone and Plushenko's just so...lackluster :(

That picture is adorable. Must say Weir is growing on me ;D

Oh, wow, I didn't even know about the backstory! Salt Lake City was probably the most I ever cared about figure skating, especially men's, because Yagudin was just that awesome, and I totally thought he was missing as a counterweight to Plushenko after that. (And I seem to remember that that was a rivalry that didn't make Plushenko look as bad as the sour grapes this year.) I didn't know this was even juicier in off-ice background story. So interesting. :-)

SAME. What really sealed the deal was NBC airing that horribly dramatized rivalry clip with the coach calling them his 'two wives'. Twas amusing :D And Plushenko was so much better then. The competition this year was nowhere near as fierce.

God, I miss those days. It seems to me that ice-skating has gone downhill. No one is doing the things they were doing back then or taking the kind of risks they did. Well, except Plushy, who by the way should have won the gold medal this olympics, and NOT Evan (who is a tall drink of water but who did not deliver an olympic gold medal performance IMHO).

Me too :((( It used to be, you're doing a quad-triple? well, I'm doing a quad-triple-triple! and a bunch of triple axels and heck, some more quads just to really prove I deserve Mishin's love (there's something about absent father figures that get me :P). Now it's gone back to 'he's going to try one quad'...and watch as he falters :(((

Tis a great backstory. Figure skating off ice is just as fierce and dramatic as figure skating on ice :D
