My parents once made a not-quite-campervan (designed for day trips, so for eating in but not sleeping in) out of an ambulance that had been retired from the local St. John's brigade (and before that it had been retired from the NHS). It was fun while it lasted, but it needed too much maintenance and wasn't really practical as the only car - we couldn't afford to run more than one. I think the experience of driving my family over the Orwell bridge in a rather windy hailstorm might have been the straw that broke the camel's back, though. I expect yours is probably a bit more comfortable.
