I guess some people just don't know how to handle people leaving and it appears to be far more common than most people realise.
My last day at Rydon was a somewhat similar experience. I'd worked there for almost 3.5 years, in a department of 10, which was the only one in the building. It took me about 30 minutes to pack up my desk during which time nobody spoke to me and my manager could barely look at me. It then took me 2 hours to say goodbye to folks in the other two buildings. I, however, chose to see this as amusing because it reinforced the fact that these people were pathetic.
The important thing is to realise that you will find another job that will be better than this one and the last laugh will be on them. I know it's tough but it says far more about them than it does about you.
