I used to be against gay marriage

I used to be against gay marriage. It was a very long time ago, and not really a very strongly held opinion, but it was mine nonetheless. I'm not proud of that, but back then I had not considered the issue very deeply, my stance was reflexive and my immediate though was "why would gays want to get married?" My thoughts on marriage in general were ( Read more... )

It's neat to see conservative dudes like my dad come around on this, too. My brother's best friend Brian is gay and my dad never suspected it, and they totally got along. When Brian told my dad he was gay, it shook him up a bit, but now he's cool with it.

When the subject of marriage equality came up during the Prop 8 days, I asked my dad, "Why can't Brian get married? How would that affect your marriage? Why is this a thing?" and he realized it was silly, and now he's over it.

It's neat.

(Great to see you back here, too!)

I took/take a different path with it. I would love to see marriage as a legal institution not exist at all, and civil unions for EVERYONE. It would eliminate the entire God/moral (ridiculous) argument, and level the field for everyone. Make marriage a religious covenant and let the churches, etc., decide for themselves, but if folks want the legal benefits of pair-bonding (or more, IMO), then head to the courthouse and sign a civil union contract.

However, that's MY little church-and-state-separation pipe dream. And if we're going to keep the current paradigm, then it sure as shit better be available for ANY two people, regardless of sexual orientation.
