Welcome! You can of course read/rec/post fic, friend people with similar interests, and there are also communities (comms) that you can join that pertain to specific interests or functions, or different role-playing games where users post as different characters (there were some amazing Harry Potter ones back in the day). There are also anonymous fic kinkmemes where you can prompt or fill other people's prompts.
Oh the kink memes... I used to live over at sherlockbbc-fic when I first joined fandom, but it has sadly quiet down a lot in later years, even before the move to DW. I should get back on that, though. Be the change and all that ;) Maybe that can even kick-start my writing again!
Most of LJ seems so quiet now, but I suspect I might just be looking in the wrong places. But that reminds me! I still have recs to make for August, thanks :)
But no, I think LJ is genuinely more quiet than it used to be, sadly! It's a shame because it's so much more logical for conversations/comments than tumblr, but I suppose tumblr excels with pictures instead.
Indeed they are! Already found about nine I want to read the fic for and perhaps two I might be able to fill myself haha
I never had conversations with people on LJ before fandoms started to migrate to Tumblr, so I can't really tell. Tumblr is just so very... fast. Things disappear in days and are impossible to find and it's easy to find yourself in an echo chamber.
Going to poke around a bit, I think. Make more noise and see if it can make it less quiet!

My favorite Sherlock comm is SherlockBBC (or sherlockbbc) because of their Sunday Recdays where they rec specific fics in comment threads.
If you're interested, I have a list of some good comms/users that rec Sherlock fic at this link. Many lj users also cross-post to dreamwidth.
