lol, i think it depends on the generation of germans you are dealing with. my german friends are great people.

and yeah, everyone thinks NYC is the capital of the USA, and that ny state means nyc. But when I was in england, everyone in the US thought that meant I was in london. Same idea. Just say there are two mountain ranges in new york state, plus a very large city. TWO MOUNTAIN RANGES, damnit.

Your story reminds me of how i got a ticket from nottingham to manchester, but took the train at the wrong time (a half hour later), and the british lady on the train who checks the tickets flipped out on me and told me i had to get off and buy a new (very expensive) ticket. luckily someone on the train heard my plight and magically had an extra unused ticket which i was able to use. it all works out in the end.
