It's been a long time... and I've been thinking that I need a serious career change, into a job that will never be shipped overseas (until planetwide matter teleportation is possible).  I want a job that will pay well, and help me provide for my family ( Read more... )

if you like to work with your hands, a skilled trade is a great idea. If you like to look at something and say "I built that" same deal.

Right now the industry is dying for carpenters, electricians, plumbers, welders. Think about your abilities. If you can't handle heights, carpentry is probably out. Getting into electricity requires a lot of math. I don't know what your background is with that. There is an office downtown Kitchener that will help you find a placement and get into an apprenticeship program. I should warn you that the schooling part of apprenticeships is fairly expensive ($2500 + books per term) but sometimes the company you're apprenticing with will pay for part or all of that.
