I keep waiting for Dreamworks, Pixar, Disney, or one of the big American studios to break out in a radical new direction, take a chance and show us something new and different and cutting edge, instead of the same old formulaic catering to political correctness and the masses, and being boxed in by it all stuff that we've been getting. Feh! Cats are independent minded, you should know that. Just ask Lupine if you're not convinced. Now that doesn't mean we're not needy when it comes to pettings and pamperings.

I agree with you, the art was good, the rendering well done and the backstory was interesting. The main problem is that the story/character motivation doesn't make sense.
This isn't a problem limited to this movie, it affects a lot of movies and tv shows. I think the budget for a project is written something like this:
Actors: 20%
Director: 20%
Special effects: 20%
Rendering: 20%
Marketing: 19.5%
Story: 0.5%

Honestly, a good, coherent, believeable story with characters that act in a reasonable way with actual motivations is the most important element. Without a story, what have you got?
