Feh! Cats are independent minded, you should know that. Just ask Lupine if you're not convinced. Now that doesn't mean we're not needy when it comes to pettings and pamperings.

I agree with you, the art was good, the rendering well done and the backstory was interesting. The main problem is that the story/character motivation doesn't make sense.
This isn't a problem limited to this movie, it affects a lot of movies and tv shows. I think the budget for a project is written something like this:
Actors: 20%
Director: 20%
Special effects: 20%
Rendering: 20%
Marketing: 19.5%
Story: 0.5%

Honestly, a good, coherent, believeable story with characters that act in a reasonable way with actual motivations is the most important element. Without a story, what have you got?
