Aragorn had been traveling as much of the island as possible since he had arrived, wanting to be as familiar with it as the woods in his world. There were so many new and strange things though, that he found himself at a lack for understanding that was greater than when he was even a child. He had been mentally making a list of plants and animals ( Read more... )

"Stop that," Bart protested as Cloud nudged him with its beak again, but he was smiling. The chocobos were amazing. He just didn't know what to do to keep them from knocking him down when he went to clean out the straws.

He hesitated, then sighed at the sound of a voice out there. "Fine, he continued, opening the stall door. "Out you go then."

At a mournful wark from Zack, he let the other two out, and followed them to the gate. "Stay in the corral, now, will you? I don't want to explain to Zell why we need to round you up."

Then he turned to the newcomer. "Sorry, they're usually not so pushy this time of day."

Aragorn had seen many things in his life, things that most Men would never see or even dream of seeing. Never before though had he seen chickens so large, although they weren't exactly chickens, similar but not quite the same.

He had seen the Great Eagles before, but this was different. Large as they were, these birds did not have the noble bearing or the intelligence of the great birds. Aragorn could tell though that they were no dumb beasts by any means.

"What are they called?" he asked softly, stepping just a bit closer. "For never have I seen such beasts as these."

"Don't worry, they're not about to take your hand off or anything," Bart said, scratching Zack's crest-feathers after a hard nudge from the black. "They're called chocobos. Where they come from, there aren't any horses, so people ride these. They're grass-eaters, like horses, but from what I understand, their first keeper didn't want them mixing or something."

He shrugged. He was used to them, now. Better than horses, if you asked him, since most horses couldn't handle the variety of commands a chocobo rider would want. Horses didn't fly, for starters.

"This is Zack, and that's Cloud, and Mako is their chick, although I think she's full-grown. Mako might be a he, it's hard to tell. Nobody knew Cloud was a female until she laid an egg, they tell me."

"Grass eaters?" Aragorn asked. He wouldn't have thought that, since birds weren't really grass eaters, he wondered how the beaks were able to grind up the grass, or if they just swallowed the reeds.

"They are fine animals indeed," he added, nodding to each one as their name was said. If they were as intelligent as horses, they it was possible they could understand a measure of the respect he was giving them that was their due.

"Are they native to this island?"
