So when he sees a rather large, white dog... or, at least, that's what he'll assume it as, downed and looking pretty much the definition of defeated, he can't turn a blind eye.
He inches up slowly toward the creature, as to not startle it, and asks in a resounding, but not intimidating tone:]
Oi, you alright there doggie?

She moves to sit up, tail wagging slowly before barking out to him.]

What's the worst that can happen? He can lose his hand. But he's not that dense, he can understand a visual cue when he sees it. A wagging tail is a good, friendly sign.]

Of course, in her own way she's also greeting him more properly.]
Reply
Ah. I guess you're not hurt then, huh?
[That doesn't stop him from double checking though, eyeing the big, white canine left and right, up and down.]

At the shake of her head, he makes a little relieved sigh, and resumes his idle scratching and petting. His lips are now pursed in thought, though.]
If you're not hurt, then what's wrong? [He shifts from his kneeling position to sit cross-legged on the floor.]
Didn't lose your owner, did you?
Reply
Yup, a wolf just wrote a message for him to read.]
Lost a friend,

He does this for a long moment, before responding just a little awkwardly.]
That so... [He shakes himself out of his shocked stupor, in time to even out the awkwardness with a small, sad laugh. He rubs at the back of his head, and leans back on his hand.] Well, I'm sorry for your loss.

Of course, Amaterasu wasn't just any regular animal so that's what answers that. Her head bows a little the time his reply comes around, lowering her gaze off to the side in her moment of sadness. But she's glancing back, wagging her tail at the man that had taken his time to check up on her.]
Thank you, it happens but even after nine months I'm still not use to it.

Ah, no problem! I know it must be hard, I'd hate to be left alone here, too.
[And then he moves once more to scratch this animal, or thing, or whatever (he'll have to ask at some point), behind the ear. He's absently thinking over being stuck in a situation like this, leaving or being left alone, and it's a bit of a mood dampener.
If he ever leaves, he wants to take his partner and his colleagues with him. That comment on time spent throws him off a little, though.]
You've been here... for nine months? That's a really long time!

She blinks back at him, tilting her head. Nine months? She nodded her head, writing out a new message now.]
It is. Some have been here already a year, even two.

So I've heard. [Scratch, scratch, scratch. He sighs.] Wish I didn't...

Some don't stay for long at times too. Time at least is still back at home while you're here.
Reply
I guess you're right! [He retracts his hands, and folds his arms proudly.] At least I left things on a good note.
[Too bad about the note his colleagues left on, but he knows things will get better for them.]
Reply
A satisfied whine.]
