[The chocolate hovers, frozen, mere inches from Javert's mouth. He had received an eye-popping mountain of chocolates from silly young well-intentioned things and grateful rich socialites who happened to benefit from the Inspector's services that attempted to butter him up with gifts for the holiday season. He found it rather amusing - and wasteful - that they attempted to bribe him with presents at all. But as luck would have it, ever since his first experience with the decadent luxury several years ago, he has discovered in himself a nasty sweet tooth. His solution is to allow himself very scant indulgences, selecting precisely one chocolate at the end of each day to eat.
Today Javert is eyeing Naomi from the kitchen counter with a salty caramel in hand. He frowns.]
What is it about? [He pops the chocolate into his mouth and chews ruminously. His slate gray eyes do not blink. He knows that tone. The corner of his nose gives a peremptory twitch.] I hope it is about your gift arrangements. You haven't yet scheduled your appointment

Stop snooping through my appointment book, darling, [slips the playful tease almost immediately from her mouth. Even with a completely serious discussion sitting on the tip of tongue, the banter between them flows as naturally as ever. Nothing short of a screaming match would push that dynamic of their relationship down.]
Here. [She gestures to his empty chair, smiling ever so briefly.] Come sit down with me. Get comfortable. Bring the box with you.
[She'll have him start with those chocolates. Then they could move onto alcohol.]
[The frail woman is slightly taken back that her always watchful husband seems completely unaware of the topic at hand. As a medical professional who has diagnosised her own fair share of clients over the years, Naomi has seen first hand how it is oftentimes the most closest of families who miss out on earlier symptoms and changes in their beloved ill family members. But even with that experience and knowledge at her disposal, she never would have suspected Javert, sharp-eyed police inspector that he was, to miss anything relating to her failing health.
Waiting for him to move in her direction towards the table, that suspicious stare of his drawing another small smile to her exhausted expression, Naomi finally stoops to reveal a large, professional-looking envelope that has been laying in wait on one of their unused kitchen table chairs. She slides the package his way, giving him the option to sift through the contents now or at his own leisure.]
I had my will drawn up today.
[She pauses, giving the man a moment to say something

[And she won't, naturally. Until she.... Well.
Javert grimaces deeply. He defiantly shuts the box of chocolate and snaps the elastic ribbon back into place.]
The whole box? That is something I don't need. [He pulls out a chair, muttering slowly through his teeth,] I shan't indulge more than once tonight.--
[A striking pause. He stares at her closely.]
What is it? [Javert asks carefully, with a mild dose of suspicion.] That you want to discuss over after-dinner chocolates and cordials, apparently.
