After visiting Mamoru, Aya slunk back to her room and curled up on the bed with the giant bear plush she'd gotten at Christmas. She felt ridiculously childish for it, but the list of upsetting revelations and epiphanies about this 'family' she had adopted without question just kept growing.
Something dark was holding them together-- something much more complicated than fighting to protect innocent lives.
Whatever that something was, it created a bond amongst them of which she was incapable of being a part.
One by one, all three of them had shown themselves to carry a heaviness deep inside them. They weren't happy like her.
That difference made the sense of division between them all the more pronounced.
She was starting to doubt whether it was possible for her to help them be happy.
And maybe worst of all... if that was the case, she wasn't sure that staying with them was even a viable option anymore. She didn't want to leave them, but already she could feel the effects of that constant heaviness under the surface, chipping away at her spirit. For now, she was fine. Six months from now? Aya couldn't say.
Between her sense of powerlessness, her sorrow and concern for their well-being, and that nagging sense of outer-circle belonging only, perhaps Aya was simply feeling more vulnerable than usual. Thankfully, stuffed bears were good friends in times like these. She hugged it tightly, and closed her eyes to the string of reasons she had to be upset. Somehow, everything would be all right.
She just had to keep believing that.
