The walls were closing in. He had to get out. Leaving his quarters, Sephiroth walked the District aimlessly, footfalls brisk but unhurried, undirected. He just needed to get away. Back in Midgar, he'd slowly begun to put his scrambled emotions back together, been able to bring them out and confront them directly; having Zack at his side was a tremendous weight from his shoulders, but then he'd been thrust into this oddness and made to confront all those shocking feelings at once, all over again. He'd barely healed from the previous emotional scarring.
But the tall General resolutely shoved all of those black thoughts to the back of his mind; this was about getting out and away, a cleansing, of sorts. He was alone, but that didn't deter him much; he generally kept his own company regardless. Perhaps fifteen minutes later brought him to the park at the edge of a rather large lake. Its crystal waters twinkled in the late sun, deliciously inviting. Always before, when he'd been on the edge of exploding in a maniacal rage, Sephiroth had ushered everyone out of the gym and spent several hours in the SOLDIER pool, venting his frustration, irritation, exasperation or whatever into exercise, wearing his mind and body down to take off the dangerous edge.
After a moment's silent contemplation, he found himself slipping off the leather coat and toeing off his boots one at the time. A furtive glance about; it wouldn't do to have gawkers, by the Goddess, but after he'd stripped down to shorts and naught else, he stepped to the lake's edge and, after making sure it was deep enough, took a graceful dive into the deep blue water. SOLDIERs had a higher tolerance for the elements than did those without their engineering, so the bracing cold wasn't really a deterrent as Sephiroth stroked cleanly for the middle of the large lake, powerful arms and legs torpedoing him through the small wavelets. He loved the water, swam like a fish and truly cherished the cleansing feeling it provided.
He'd just reached the middle of the lake when he felt a slippery nudge against his knee and he straightened, smoothing silver from his forehead as a large glistening shape broke the surface and stared at him, puzzled. Green eyes blinked back and Sephiroth realized he'd come face to face with the fabled "monster of Lake Meridian". One of the residents in the District had informed him of the beast's home in these waters, but had said, "If'n ye dun be botherin' 'er, Nessie'll not be botherin' ye, laddie buck." He'd grinned, thanked her for the supplies and went on about his business, thinking no more of it.
Yet here she was, apparently wondering at this intruder into her watery realm. A trained soldier, Sephiroth waited a bit tensely for an attack, but she simply ducked her head down beneath the water once more and swam past him, giving him a nudge with one of her flippers. He cocked his head as she swam back, doing the same once more. She lifted her head and made an inquisitive sort of grunt, to which Sephiroth laughed and kicked forward again, swimming on. He heard her watery trill and dove beneath to see her just below him, keeping in pace as they swam together. Eventually she rose a bit and he dared to reach out, gently grasping her flipper and she flicked her tail with a trill and swam on, towing him with a sort of childlike glee.
They played together for the better part of an hour then she gently deposited him in the shallows and Sephiroth had to privately admit he was feeling a bit winded. All in all, an amazing workout, however, and he stroked Nessie's bowed neck a bit regretfully. They exchanged no words, but her eyes were luminous as she nudged his shoulder with her nose a final time before again flicking her large tail and swimming back to her watery home.
Sephiroth, a bit more tired than he'd expected, grinned for the first time in what seemed ages and swam back to the bank, hauling himself from the water near his clothes and, since leather was uncomfortable when it was wet, sat on the cold ground wringing water from his long hair and waiting for the definitely chilly breeze to dry his skin so he could get dressed and return to his apartment for a hot shower.
