EVENT SANDSTORM: DETAILED INFORMATION

Sep 01, 2009 00:39

The SANDSTORM has officially begun! From now until Sunday, September 6th at midnight CST a Sandstorm will be ravaging the lands of Somarium.

At its most violent and ruthless, the storm's sands and winds will be strong enough to flay the skin off your body. At best, your characters will struggle against sand in their eyes and mouths. Clothing and goggle-like objects picked up around the city can be used for protection if your characters must get around.

The buildings are also no longer safe. The sands are harsh enough to shatter glass and ruin some of the weaker buildings, so watch out.

During the sandstorm, Dreamberries will be spotty at best. They will be full of static, interference, and howling winds, either by fault of the sandstorms or the monsters moving on in. Texting will work okay, dreams are still visible, but calls will be patchy and extremely difficult to understand.

There are four sets of one-hour lulls per day. Dreamberry reception will not be better during these lulls. The schedule of 'safe hours' is as follows:

Tues. Sept 1Wed. Sept 2Thurs. Sept 3Fri. Sept 4Sat. Sept 5thSun. Sept 6

Once the storm begins, each character will notice three new cards in their pocket.

  • The first is a Teleportation Card. Each teleportation card is rather nondescript and labeled with a 'T.' Each is preprogrammed to take the user to a specific location in Somarium... However, it may not be to a place the character wishes to go. Teleportation locations are completely random; if you use a card, you may end up getting lucky and teleporting to the cafe, or you may be unlucky enough to teleport into Volgin's room. Locations are up to the player's discretion, but have some fun with this, folks. Each teleportation card may only be used once, so save them for extremely sticky situations, but they will become available again in other ways once the event is over.
  • The second is a Healing Card. They are capable of healing major wounds inflicted by the storm or by the monsters brought in by the storm (to become much more apparent after the storm is over). Healing cards are a scarce resource and are marked with a red cross. They will heal the user from most major wounds, no matter how serious. However, they are single use only. Once your character uses his or her card, it is gone. Use your card wisely; your character may even wish to barter them off for items or protection during the event. Healing cards will also become available again in other ways once the event is over.
  • The third is a Status Effect Card of your choice (pick one from the list in this post. All status effect cards look alike. Be careful not to mix up your cards!

Monsters will start to show up (and they will sound EXTREMELY close during storm lulls), but they will not appear or attack until Thursday or Friday.

Psycho Mantis has hung a NO REFUNDS sign for City Passes in the Mod Shop, which remains shockingly untouched through the storm. This sign will remain until the barrier returns.

So with all of this danger brewing, what is a safe place for your character to go? With the cottages getting blown over by sand maelstroms, what the hell can they do?

Well.

  • They can camp out in the courthouse, but it has many large windows and its security is dubious. If characters want to risk it for shelter, it isn't a bad choice.
  • There are also the sewers located beneath the city. They smell bed, they're infested with vicious poisonous rats, and they're pretty dank.
  • There are many rickety basements and pits in the industrial district, but they're not particularly stable.
  • Or your character can come up with an idiotic INGENIUS alternative plan of his own like trying to bust open the tunnels, which are impenetrable. I'm looking at you, Kamina.

The choice is your character's to make. Ghosts will lurk and help when they can, but they can't do everything; banding together with others is the key to survival when faced with scarce resources.

One final note about the barrier: It is officially down, but your characters can't see it, since an impenetrable wall of swirling sand is there in its place. Anyone near the outskirts of Somni will find that they cannot go further out into the desert.

Please mark all event logs in somarium with the !event: sandstorm tag. If you want to have your character out during a lull, mark the date and relative time when they're out (ex: WHEN: September 3rd, during the lull. or WHEN: September 2nd, morning lull. Don't overcomplicate; we'll get what you're talking about). :D The largest chunk of time with a lull is on September 3rd. Backdating is cool and fun, so don't be afraid to do so.

HAVE FUN, FOLKS! We'll be providing more posts as the situation in Somarium changes!
