For several months, Somarium has been running on a handwaved, assumed Law Code that roughly mirrors American law. Below is the player-surmised system proposed by Lari and Yuli back in October 2009, available for public viewing and discussion. On the whole, Somarium has been operating under these assumptions since the law system went into effect. If anyone has any suggestions, please feel free to contact any of us and we'll be thrilled to hear them!
❖ somarium law
For those of you who happened to catch the thread, Edgeworth and Javert have
discovered the Somarium Law Code in October 2009. These laws are available on the Dreamberry network under the 'Document Share' folder in the main menu.
Although it is impossible to codify all the laws of a country/nation/land in one simple, succinct post, I will briefly cover the most severe laws and the subsequent punishment system so that we're all on the same page.
Criminals (if you're obvious about your crimes and you are caught) will be investigated and apprehended by the Somarium Police, headed by Miles Edgeworth (administrative head), Franziska von Karma (prosecutor), and Chief Inspector Javert (Investigative head). There are temporary holding facilities in the District Five police station and the Somarium city courthouse, which are located directly beside one another on the same block. Miles's office is in the courthouse. Javert's is in the District Five Police Headquarters.
Major crimes, such as murder, manslaughter, assault, etc. will be coordinated between the players involved. Though murder and other such major crimes are usually very visible to the Somarium community, it is up to the perpetrating character's player to decide how, when, or where it is viable for their criminal character to get apprehended and arrested. No arrests or punishments may be bestowed without player permission.
Punishments will always be arranged on a player-by-player basis. Only what is requested and permitted by the condemned's player will be implemented. However, players should make an effort to have their chosen punishments punishments reflect the severity of the crime. Punishments can range from a temporary holding period, to a permanent sacrifice by the criminal character, to a prolonged parole and house arrest period, to a finite period of community service. Punishments can be as creative as the condemned character's player and the police force believe is most appropriate or fun for the situation. Punishments are assumed to be delivered by Miles Edgeworth, Franziska von Karma, and an NPC judicial system.
Fines are also possible for small transgressions such as speeding, driving on the wrong side of the road, or littering. Some police officers may be stiffer on these points than others.
Among the most major of crimes (and among the least understood by Somarium "visitors") are Dream Crimes. Dream Crimes occur when one character or NPC tampers with, in any way, another character or NPC's dreams without express permission or a qualified license. Dream Crimes can have serious psychological and physical repercussions on Somarium natives, as well as visiting entities from other worlds. Player characters do not currently have enough of an understanding of dream tampering or illegal "dreamwalking" to commit these crimes yet, but NPC dream tamperers are occasionally arrested. Members of the police force may feel free to brainstorm NPC cases for their characters to work on. Any questions about dream crime details may be directed to Lari, who plays Inspector Javert.
The members of the police force and Somarium Law system are as follows, to date:
- Chief Prosector Miles Edgeworth (edgey_boy)
- Prosecutor Franziska von Karma (perfektioniert)
- Chief Inspector Javert (chose_death)
- Administrative Coordinator Charlie Pace, paper pusher extraordinaire
- Lieutenant Akihiko Sanada
- Detective Noel Vermillion
- Detective Harry Potter
- Captain Nakago
- Officer Elliot Nightray
- Officer Liam Lunettes
- Officer Aqua
- Officer Tali'Zorah vas Normandy
- Officer D
- Officer Shirou Emiya
- Officer Tsubaki Yayoi
Also implicitly included is a horde of NPC police characters meant to fill out the less exciting roles.
Police force members are encouraged to run with their roles as officers and have fun with it, however, they will on occasion be given random assignments from the higher-ups. It should also be noted that police force members are included in all official police calls unless specifically stated.
Any questions may be directed to this post or to Lari (
chose_death, AIM M L Inspecteur).
