I know you're probably not into the whole self-help book thing, but have you tried looking at the Anxiety and Phobia workbook ever? I think they probably sell it in the states. With pills and therapy, it really helped me manage my problems a lot better.

The problem is that those acute attacks tend to make things worse. With a good benzodiazepene, I'd probably be good.
