Name: Samus Aran
Fandom: Metroid
Timeline: Manga/Other M Flashback Sequences
Age: 14
Appearance: Samus is something of a tomboy. Still tall for her age (she's almost as tall as her fully-grown male commanding officer), she has short golden blonde hair cut around her face with bangs, and blue eyes. Her usual facial expression can be described as "tough", trying to project an image of being stronger, physically and emotionally, than she actually is. She is usually wearing her Galactic Federation uniform, consisting of a dark red T-shirt, short-sleeved olive jacket (that she leaves partially unbuttoned) with her rank bars sewn onto the left sleeve and the GF insignia and her rank pins on the breast pocket, black pants, and black boots. She also wears black fingerless gloves, and a communication device behind her left ear.
Although she does have her famous suit, it's only the very basic version of it, yellow without the huge shoulders or other iconic features, as she didn't get most of the upgrades until adulthood.
Abilities: Being half-Chozo, Samus is far more flexible and agile than a human girl should be. Highly trained in acrobatics and hand-to-hand combat, her training with the Chozo and the Federation is still fresh in her mind, and she hasn't relied as heavily on her suit yet to diminish those capabilities. She can jump higher than humans, and is faster than humans as well. This version of Samus would be more likely to try to take something on bareknuckle before she summons her suit.
But she does have her suit, or rather, the first, unupgraded version of it, which only has her HUD with her vitals and missile stores, is capable of Morph Ball, and has the basic arm cannon. Although still a powerful weapon, she's hardly the powerhouse she will be as an adult with it, barely able to take down the most basic of Space Pirates in it.
Personality: Samus is a young girl thrown into an adult world, caught up in orders and responsibilities and the knowledge that she will one day have the weight of the universe on her shoulders. She tries to act as strong as possible, projecting a tough image and taking on all comers who dare challenge her because of her age or sex, but this is all a mask to hide the fact that she is still terrified of what's come deep down. Even at this young age, she has to carry the burden of being the strong one, and she can't let anyone know how scary that is for fear that it will cause her to break.
She isn't as jaded as her adult self, hasn't been subjected to the onslaught of nightmarish images that make adult Samus so genuinely fearless (she doesn't even remember the traumatic event that started her on this path in the first place), so most of her bravery is nothing more than false bravado, her trying to convince herself as much as anyone else that she's tough and fearless. She acts egotistical, but it's uncertain whether she buys into her own hype or not.
She's also something of a brat: she hates being told what to do, making her a discipline problem in her military life, and if she thinks she knows better than her superiors, she will do whatever she feels is right, and probably learn harsh lessons later from her lack of experience. But behind the headstrong nature and fearless mask is a girl who just wants to do the right thing, who just hopes that she can be the hero that she's been prophecized to be.
History: Samus was born on the human colony K-2L, a colony owned and operated by the Galactic Federation for the mining of afloraltite, a mineral valued for its use as efficient and long-burning spaceship fuel. Her parents were Rodney Aran, the mining supervisor and leader of the colony, and his wife Virginia, a housewife and stay at home mother. From a young age, Samus was both utterly fearless and known for getting into trouble: she often wandered off to explore, even going into areas other kids refused to enter out of fear, and confronted the local wildlife without reservation. Although this was a source of much worry to her mother, her father was fond of his little explorer and thought they should nurture that bravery and encourage her appetite for exploration.
When Samus was three, the colony was visited by the Chozo, a race of wise and nomadic bird people and Samus' first encounter with a non-human species. She was fascinated by the new arrivals and quickly made friends with an Elder that she affectionately called "Old Bird", who in turn found the little girl utterly charming. The Chozo were hoping that the colonists would give them alforaltite, as they were running low on fuel and needed to reach their nearby home planet of Zebes, but Rodney was unable to grant their request, as the Chozo, despite being highly regarded by the Federation, were not members themselves and thus not allowed access to Federation materials. The Chozo took this refusal well and left the planet on good terms.
Shortly after their departure, the colony was raided by Space Pirates, lead by their vicious, intelligent, and bloodthirsty leader, the huge and dragon-like Ridley. They, too, wanted to secure the afloraltite themselves, and upon landing, Ridley gave his men only one order: "Kill anyone you want, eat anyone you want. Have fun!" Samus, confused because the last encounter with an alien race had gone so well for the colony, tried to approach Ridley to make friends with him and get him to stop the massacre, putting her right in his line of fire. At the last moment, Virginia, seeing her daughter in trouble, threw herself directly between them, and Samus watched as Ridley tore her mother to pieces, giving her just enough time to hide. Shortly after her mother's murder, her father sacrificed himself to detonate the afloraltite supply in the hopes of crippling the Pirates' ships and taking the Pirates with him, but not before sending out a distress signal for the Federation.
Although Ridley was seriously injured, the raid continued, and ultimately, there were no survivors...except for one tiny girl, who was forced to watch as things got worse: Ridley began to eat the corpses of the slain colonists, including her mother, in order to regenerate his injured body enough that he could escape with his men in their crippled ships. Shortly after the Pirates left, the Chozo, having intercepted the distress signal and known that the Federation would never make it in take, returned to survey the carnage. They were horrified by the brutality...and shocked to find that there was one survivor.
At a loss for what to do with her, Old Bird implored the other Elders to take Samus back to Zebes with her, although they were hesitant: they were all elderly, in no position to raise a young human girl, and Zebes was a planet unfit for human life. But without any other options, they brought her back with them to consult with their organic super computer advisor, Mother Brain. Mother Brain decided that the girl would recieve a treatment that would make her half-Chozo, altering her DNA and biology so that she would not only be able to survive on Zebes, but be imbued with the natural strength, speed, and agility of the Chozo race. It was then that it was revealed that the Chozo were once a warrior race, who made some of the greatest advances in combat technology in the galaxy, but as a result of their sins and their hubris, they lost their wings, their females died off, and now all that remained of the race were a handful of elderly males, who traveled the galaxy to try to improve it and spread peace. But their days were numbered, and Mother Brain's solution would make Samus, effectively, the heir to their race.
With their goals once again cast in the direction of peace, and with Mother Brain's decision now final, they set about altering the girl's physiology and trained her from that day forward to be their last and greatest creation, the ultimate instrument of peace and justice. Although she couldn't really remember what happened on K-2L that day, they never kept the details a secret from her, using it to cultivate her hatred of the Pirates so that she would be focused on the path that had been set before her. As they trained her physically in the combat arts, they also worked on their greatest piece of weaponry: the Power Suit, a suit of semi-organic armor that bonded to Samus (and only her, and could also only be removed by her) loaded with high-tech weapons, computer systems, and functions that would make her stronger, faster, and able to infiltrate areas no other person could.
When Samus was ten, the Pirates attempted to ambush Zebes and take the Chozo's territory for themselves. Although they were able to fight off the attack (with Samus' help), it became apparent to the Elders that they were aware they were working to stop them, if not exactly how, and that Samus would have to confront her destiny soon. So when Samus was only fourteen years old, she left the only home she had ever known and joined the Galactic Federation's army, under the command of General Adam Malkovich.
Samus' military record was...not flattering. She didn't listen to orders, was convinced her lifetime of training meant that she knew better than the seasoned veterans, and didn't understand the importance of certain military protocals. In general, she was a bratty teenager trying to function in an adult atmosphere, with the knowledge that she was the savior of the universe, but absolutely no practical experience in the area or understanding of what that meant, or what she would have to sacrifice to achieve it. More than once, her rash actions nearly resulted in her unit being killed, or jeopardizing their missions.
Despite this, her commanding officer developed a great fondness for the girl. A jaded old military man, Adam began to feel hope for the future for the first time in a long time as he watched Samus growing up on the battlefield. He defended her to his superiors, granted her leniency when she wanted to undertake personal missions, and eventually gained her grudging respect, which lead to her slowly coming to listen to him and value his input. He always called her "Lady", something that, as an adult, she noted would have sounded condescending coming from anyone else, but Adam always made it sound respectful. In return, Samus always called him by his first name.
Roleplay Sample - Log: Samus drummed her fingers on the table in front of her, staring intently at the polished surface as if she expected it to suddenly project an amusing image. Instead she just saw her own reflection: shaggy hair falling into her eyes, her face everyone told her looked too young to belong to a soldier. Too pretty to belong to a fighter. She sighed, not realizing quite how loud the sound was until Adam rounded his gaze onto her.
"Am I boring you, Lady?" he asked sternly, the other members of her unit also turning to face her. She felt like sinking into the floor. Instead, she just sat up straighter, face full of stony resolve, saluting her commanding officer, making sure no trace of blush or anything else that would give away her embarassment made it to her face.
"No, Adam," she said clearly, defiantly. She was allowed to call him by his first name, but usually not in front of their entire unit. He said it looked like favoritism, not to mention insubordination on her part. But it was just natural to call him that.
"That's General Malkovich," Adam told her in response, before he continued his briefing. And Samus turned her gaze back down to the table as soon as she was sure everyone was watching him instead of her.
Roleplay Sample - Journal: Okay, these aren't my barracks, so I guess I was taken prisoner. What did Adam say the protocol was for being taken prisoner...oh, right.
