100th Dipsea Race Report

Jun 13, 2010 22:11

OK, it went very badly for me. But I'm kind of all right with it. I'm not injured, life is still good, and I am going to take June to get back to running for fun rather than to put pressure on myself for PRs and the like.

The quick and dirty details: 6.8 miles (yay for shortcuts!), 1:26:27, 643rd place.

The gory details... )

I didn't think there was such a thing as an illegal shortcut at dipsea.

It's a bummer that you didn't make your time goals, but very smart of you not to push through a race on a day that wasn't yours.

Yup, there are a LOT of illegal shortcuts. Anything in Muir Woods is verboten because it's a national park, and in order for the Dipsea Foundation to get their permits the state has been very picky about what they let them do. Even Suicide, which is a time-honored shortcut, the powers that be have been trying to disallow for years.

In the old days there were no illegal shortcuts. Someone even figured out how to run around the hill rather than over and finished fifth, and then they disallowed that route.

Even though it was a rough day, I'm very impressed. I might have to take it on next year. Running for the joy of running is the best, anyway. :)

If the lottery gods are fickle, I would definitely recommend the Practice Dipsea, run by the DSE Runners Club three weeks before the actual Dipsea. All the same goodness (minus a quarter-mile at the beginning and a tenth at the end) with 1200 fewer people. Plus an earlier start time means less heat!
