I've made another fanmix!
Dick Grayson and Stephanie Brown are two characters that I... don't talk about often, haha. They're both former Robins, so I've gone on at some length about them before in the mixes I made for them (Dick's is
here, and Steph's is
here), but other than that and the fic I'll post probably later today I mostly leave them be. This is a horrible oversight on my part.
The Batman stories are, in general, darker than many other comic storylines. Batman is a hero born out of Bruce Wayne's tragedy; the role of Robin would never have come about were it not for Dick's parents dying. Gotham itself is a mess and a half, and Bludhaven is even worse. The stories aren't without humor and lighthearted moments, but the characters tend towards the serious and often heartbreaking.
Dick and Steph are like the beacons of hope in a place like Gotham. Batman represents the dark and the mystery; Robin is the hope in that darkness. Dick was the bright part of the original Dynamic Duo, both in appearance and spirit - it's not that he doesn't get depressed over things, but for the most part, he's the one who can see beyond the current and help lift everyone's spirits past that. It might take him a while, and he might resist it, but it's in his nature to be that optimistic person. Steph hasn't had it easy either; her dad was a mid-level villain, and her mom was a junkie. She gave her kid up for adoption at fifteen. She spent a long time being told that she wasn't good enough to be a real hero, and when she finally got the green light, she was nearly killed for it. Even after all of this, she manages to be bright and cheerful in a place that's constantly trying to beat everyone down.
It's like watching a field in the summer, when it's falling to dark - you see two fireflies out there, not always visible but providing bits of light here and there, and they drift towards each other and then away again. When they're close, though, they make the area around them even brighter for being together. That's the way these two would be - it's not all happy times and rainbows, but they're two amazing, optimistic people who would be able to bolster each other and help brighten the world around them.
In that light, I've made a fanmix for Dick and Steph, a ship that I hope finds a lot more love.
