M2L-439 is much colder than the database said it would be. That’s all Evan can think as he and David stumble through the snow, which is laying thickly and drifting even as they try to make their way back to the Gate. It’s cold and it’s snowy and the sun is going down and it’s terrible, and David’s teeth are starting to chatter, and they’re still a good four klicks from the Gate.
“Okay,” Evan decides. “Let’s find a spot to shore up for the night. We’ll get some rest, try to stay warm, and get to the Gate in the morning.”
David nods, a minute movement, and they head for the treeline. Evan has the tent set up in a relatively wind-free spot in about fifteen minutes, and he and David crawl inside and zip the flaps to wait out the night.
Evan busies himself with setting up the inside of the tent - unrolling his sleeping pack, setting the tiny pillow at its head, digging out his MRE - but notices that David isn’t doing the same. David’s just sitting, arms wrapped around himself, tremors running through his thin frame as his fingers clench deeper and deeper into his coat.
“Hey,” Evan says, concerned. David’s eyes blink open slowly. “David. With me, hey.”
Evan leans over and grabs David’s hands, pulling them from the fabric of his coat, and pulls the gloves off. Jesus, his hands are freezing, Evan thinks as he rubs them between his own. “David?”
David’s eyes, which had been sliding closed, open again. “Evan?”
Not good. Not good, not good, and Evan doesn’t have anything to warm him up. Except - there’s David’s sleeping bag, and there’s his, and yeah, that’s going to have to do. “We need to warm you up,” Evan tells him steadily, hands already working David’s jacket open and pulling it off. David’s shivers increase as the cold air hits his skin. “Can you help me here?”
David just blinks at him uncomprehendingly, and Evan swears as he pulls clothing from David and from himself until they’re both in boxers. Evan tugs David to the sleeping bag he’d laid out earlier. “In,” he says, and David slowly unfolds himself and struggles into the bag. Evan spreads the other bag over David before slipping down in beside him.
It’s a tight fit, there’s no doubt, but they’re pressed right up together this way, and Evan can already feel David’s chilled skin warm against him. It will be a while before the warmth seeps back into David’s bones, but this will help, at the very least.
“Okay,” Evan says. “Let’s talk.”
But David’s already asleep, and Evan can’t remember if that’s good or bad, to sleep when you’re so cold, but while he’s trying to remember he drifts off himself.
The crackling in his ear brings Evan out of sleep later. How much later he’s not sure, but it’s dark outside the tent, so it’s not yet morning. “Sheppard to Lorne,” the voice repeats, and Evan struggles to reach a hand out of the sleeping bag to tap on the radio.
“Lorne here,” Evan responds a few seconds later.
“Glad to hear you’re not a Popsicle,” Sheppard’s voice jokes, but Evan can hear the relief in the tone. “You two okay?”
Okay might be overstating it. David’s warmer, but he hasn’t woken, and he’s usually a pretty light sleeper. “Well, sir, if you’ve got a Jumper and some heating pads, I don’t think the Doc is gonna complain too loudly about me waking him up.”
“He okay?”
“Not really,” Evan says bluntly. “Not injured, though.”
Sheppard sighs. “Small mercies. Give us twenty.”
It’s actually eighteen minutes later that Sheppard’s pulling down the flaps, and Evan’s only just gotten dressed. David’s still in the sleeping bag, making small incoherent noises as he curls into himself, and Evan can see Sheppard evaluating the scene.
“Ronon,” he calls over his shoulder, and the Satedan appears instantly. He picks David up without being told, sleeping bag and all, and walks to the Jumper Evan can now see, set down a few yards from the tent. He leans down to grab the other sleeping bag, but Sheppard catches his wrist.
“Go warm up,” he says, tossing a thumb over his shoulder at the Jumper. “I’ll grab this.”
Evan’s too tired and too cold to argue, so he node and follows Ronon through the snow to the Jumper.
They’re in Atlantis less than half an hour later, and both Evan and David are whisked to the infirmary. Evan is released not long after, but David still hasn’t woken up, so Evan goes to his office and stares at requisition forms until Sheppard throws a pen at him.
“Go check on your botanist,” Sheppard tells him point-blank. “The one time I’m actually trying to do paperwork is when you’re all mopey. I see how it is.”
Evan debates between shocked and thankful for a minute before Sheppard reaches for another pen, so he stands and heads down to the infirmary before the man can line up his shot.
“Thanks,” he says at the doorway. Sheppard waves his hand in the air, a gesture that could mean anything, and Evan continues.
David’s eyes are open and he’s answering Nurse Marie’s questions when Evan walks in. Marie laughs at something and marks a few things on the chart, and when she leaves David’s bedside, Evan can see the smile on David’s face. It brightens so much that it fills the room when he spots Evan.
“Major,” he calls. “They’re releasing me.”
“Good to hear, Doc,” Evan replies, grinning back. “You’re okay to leave?”
“He’s okay,” Marie confirms as she reaches to take the IV out of David’s hand. “He could use a nice hot bath, but he’s out of danger.”
“Oh, a hot bath,” David murmurs, and there’s a note in his voice that makes Evan stop and notice the invitation in his eyes. “I’ll certainly do that.”
Marie doesn’t notice it. “That’s a good idea,” she says, holding the chart out for David to sign. “Relax tonight, Dr. Parrish. Take it easy and tuck into bed a little early, and you’ll be fine tomorrow.”
“I can handle that,” David says easily, swinging his legs from beneath the sheets and setting his feet on the floor. “So, Major, did we manage to bring back a sample of that vine, or did you abandon it when I passed out?”
Evan laughs. “Tomorrow, Doc,” he promises as they walk out of the infirmary.
They walk to David’s quarters in an easy silence, and when David walks in Evan follows, shutting and locking the door. He turns and pulls David in close, wrapping his arms around the taller man’s waist.
“You scared me,” Evan tells him softly. “It’s a good thing the Colonel showed up when he did. You were pretty out of it, David.”
“Sorry,” David replies just as quietly. “I didn’t think it was that bad, but when we stopped moving, I just couldn’t start again.”
Evan nods and brushes their mouths together before stepping back. “Hot bath?”
“Sounds good,” David agrees, stripping out of his shirt on his way to the bathroom. Evan follows and sets the bath to run a few degrees warmer than David usually does. The tub fills quickly, bless the Ancient design, and David sighs as he slips in.
“This is wonderful,” he tells Evan, a blissful smile on his face. “C’mon, get in.” Evan obliges, settling back against David’s chest and letting the warm water flow around them both.
“This is nice,” he agrees. David just hums as he reaches for the shampoo bottle and squirts some of the gel into his hand. Evan lets out a breath and leans back as David’s long fingers work the shampoo into his scalp, gently massaging the skin. He rubs at Evan’s scalp for a while, and Evan just closes his eyes and relaxes back into David. David’s hand tilts Evan’s face up, and Evan feels David rinsing the shampoo from his hair.
David pulls Evan back against his chest, and his hands wander down Evan’s body. He doesn’t seem to be doing anything purposeful, just touching, and Evan jumps when David’s hand lands between his legs.
“I don’t think that’s very relaxing,” Evan points out as David brushes his knuckles against Evan’s cock.
“Sure it is,” David replies, stroking up and down lightly, easily, and it sort of is, so Evan leans back into David’s chest and closes his eyes.
There’s a gentle rhythm, slow and easy, no surprises, and Evan feels his release building slowly in his stomach. He raises one hand from the water to wrap up behind David’s head and pull him in for a kiss, and Evan moans into David’s mouth as he comes.
Evan’s free hand snakes between their bodies, wrapping around David’s erection and stoking just as easily as David had done. David sighs as he comes, and they sit together in the cooling water for a few more minutes before Evan stands and grabs the towels from the counter.
The bed is large and the sheets cool, but their bodies tangle together, still warm from the bath, and it’s not long before they’re drifting to sleep together, warm at last.
