A species-defining trait has been observed to occur as the result of multiple mutations occurring over 10,000 generations apart.Twelve populations of E. coli bacteria were derived from a single bacterium then cultured for 44,000 generations (about 20 years), with samples of each generation frozen for later study ( Read more... )
