I'm posting this from a cafe with my laptop as at the moment I lack my own internet connection. Every time I sit down before I remember I'm without a net connection, I catch my self opening a browser and trying to load slashdot [slashdot.org] out of habit- maybe that should worry me? Hope I will have a connection soon. My new one will be nearly ( Read more... )

If I had a nicer, faster connection, I'd say we should play a game of Civ 3. Or Alpha Centauri.

Didn't know that you already moved though.. Kinda sucks.

At some point where are going to have to get together for an Alpha Centauri LAN parity. Realistically though, since it’s unlikely to happen any time soon, we could try a game over the Net. I know you’re on dial up, but it shouldn’t matter too much; the game is six years old and turn based, after all.

You went to Crimson Cafe, didn't cha? G'luck with the job hunt.

You're only reminding me of my addiction to Shogun Total War- soon I'll return to my currently running game- yet another attempt to conquer Japan. I really need to go ahead and buy Medieval Total War (with the Viking Invasion, since they finally packaged the main with the add on). They're already about to release Rome: Total War out soon too...it won best of E3, a f'n strategy game...oh how I long to see Rome BURN. I'll re-read the bit about Hannibal in my copy of Hart's STRATEGY, do some research, and attempt to recreate Hannibal's March on Rome- only finish the job rather than get turned back to Carthage by the stupid politicans. The scope they seem to have going on ROME might cover Ancient Greece as well- I already know there are some Spartan Spartan Hoplites. I'm so aching to recreate the battle of the Hot Gates- 300 Spartans against a million or so Persians ( ... )

I’ve heard good things about the total war series, first one and the newest, but I’ve never played any of them. I didn’t know there was a Medieval one though, maybe it was a flop or I’ve been out of things.

I become rather infatuated with the Romans lately; I’d be more interested playing the Roman side of the war with Hannibal. As far as the Spartans stand against the Persians, I’m not quite so impressed. I suppose there is some honor in fighting to the death, but the Spartans still lost. The whole thing was just an attempt to buy time for the Greeks to ready their fleet; only the fleet was destroyed. So in the end what good did it did the stand at Thermopylae do?

Did the persians conquer greece? no. Did the persians manage to finish their invasion whatsoever after Thermopylae? not really. So that's what good it did. It held them off long enough to rally SOMETHING from greece. The Spartans increased their honor and killed a lot of persians, but my point was to hold the line with or without the flanking along the goat pass...to see if that was possible- though sure, a computer simulation will be inferior regardless. I'm hardly a general and such would be a waste of well trained troops. it is really about economy when it comes to well trained troops. The indirect approach with a slender force is often better than a direct approach with the larger force. That is at least according to Hart's account of things. Thermopylae was at least a very excellent example of sacrifice, sure if the Athenians didn't pull through, the persians still didn't suceed.

The R.H. Liddell Hart book is proving rather quite interesting. I just finished with Marlborough...

I know the Persians didn’t win the war my point was that the stand, out side of a moral booster, ultimately had no real effect on the war. The fact the Persians didn’t finish there invasion was due to latter defeat, not Thermopylae. I do have to admit though that those 1000 Spartans managed to kill a lot of men; including the supposedly invincible Persian troops, the immortals. So I have to give them some credit. If it wasn’t for the goat trail the Spartans probably would have won. I wonder how the video game will simulate the goat trail?

I might have to pick up a copy of that book. It seems right up my ally.

Now that I’ve finally been introduced to the series I’m going to have to get a copy of Civ 3 at some point. I’ve hared a lot of good things about it and it is as good as the original it’s worth playing.

I’ll be sure to come visit you after you move back up, but sometime before the summer is over I'm going to have to go to Montgomery and see you decked out in your waffle house attire.
