grad school, woohoo!

I think I might've just kicked ass on my Romantic Poetry midterm. :)

For the first time all semester, I'm thinking, "grad school, woohoo!"

It's just been kind of traumatic thus far -- til now, with a chance to prove myself academically. We'll see what happens.

(It helps that I got to write a considerable amount about Coleridge, whose poetry I actually ( Read more... )

On the first day of my Introduction to the English Major class, my professor did a very suggestive, theatrical reading of "Kubla Khan." Halfway through, I realized the poem was about a vagina (at least, that is one interpretation--I did not think this when we studied it at Faith). We did personal evaluations in class yesterday and someone wrote about the professor: "Although sometimes Dr. R--- reads poems about human sexual organs that makes me uncomfortable...." All I can say: lol.

So what is "Kubla Khan" about? I know it's an intentional fallacy when you just say that the guy was trippin'....

It is about the creative process.

The first part is about building something (i.e. a text) out of nothing and the fallacies within that concept (i.e. it cannot happen but many believe that that is how a text is created).

The second part makes you realize that creation can be a difficult, even violent, process.

The last part talks about how sometimes, even with the best of intentions, you can fail to write anything you consider to be worthwhile.

As for "he hath drunk the milk of paradise" -- Coleridge assumed people would think he was crazy for looking at the creative process this way.

At least, that is what we discussed in class. ;)

Also, I got your text, but I am super-busy that weekend. The 27th is Kate's b'day and we have family plans, then on the 28th I am hosting a small b'day dinner for Erek (since the 28th is HIS b'day). I want to hang out with you sometime, though...
