Some people like to make life a little tougher than it is

Jeff had a bucket list. Not too much of one as he didn't like to think about dying, and when he did he wasn't entirely certain about the specifics, though he was fairly certain that werewolf or not, silver bullets would kill him.

There were simply several things that he wanted to do before he died. One was skydiving, which he had already crossed off the list. Another was to run for school board, as he didn't believe that he would ever be elected, but campaigning could be fun.

Another came by way of one of his first and few enduring loves: pop culture. Ever since he had seen the movie Big Daddy, he wanted to toss sticks in front of skaters with a kid, and watch the skater fall. And later in a sort of reenactment, train the child to do it himself.

Jeff now found himself in a park with a young boy who he was 90% sure looked up to him. The problem of the situation was that while Julian in the movie was five, Alan was nine and a half and old enough not to follow every hairbrained idea an adult around him would come up with.

Always the instructor, Jeff decided to demonstrate first, casually walking up to the pathway where the skaters frequented and dropping a large stick square in the middle just as he had seen in the film. He then slid a hand in his pocket and casually walked back to Alan. Turning around to face the future carnage he mumbled "Now we wait."

Much to Jeff's annoyance, no one came, which was unusual for the weekend. As he caught Alan roll his eyes, Jeff was prepared to have them call it a day and leave the park. Before he could get the words out, he heard the telltale scratching of wheels on pavement and within moments a roller blader came whizzing around a corner, fully dressed in protective gear which rendered the fall they took as a result of the stick nothing more than an embarrassment.

With a few grumbles and curses, the skater picked himself up from the ground and began rolling ahead, determinedly not looking in either Alan or Jeff's direction. After he left, Jeff let out a bark of laughter, clapping his hands together in triumph. Alan too was laughing. Looking up at Jeff he said excitedly, "Maybe the next one will be fat!"

Jeff lifted a hand with a half shrug. "We won't know unless we stay to find out. Go put the stick back so we can see."

And Alan obeyed.
