On an odd note, I noticed, both in speech and writing, that election coverage and commentary, whether from Jon Stewart or Hillary Clinton, insisted on using "an historic".

Has the country gone British English on me, and not informed me? "History" and "historic" have a clear /h/ sound, where I'm from - and hence we use "a historic".

It really irks me when a magazine dedicated to computing refers to HTML as "the programming language that underpins the Internet".

Just call it a "language". "Markup language" would confuse most people, so don't include "markup". The only reason that "programming language" doesn't fail completely is that, yes, it is a language, and, hey, it's done ( Read more... )
