apparently the introduction of pepsi, coca-cola, and now kfc are due to pressure from gulf arab investors who license said brands... atleast, that's what i've been told...

I've been told that other countries' citizens refuse to eat as unhealthy as Americans and thus have forced some fast food chains to change their menus, recipes, etc.

I'm deeply saddened by this news, don't get me wrong (and the Pepsi and Coke thing pisses me off more)...but I hope for the sake of citizens over there they either change their menu or citizens simply boycott it. Arab food is one of the best in the world... and healthiest!!

i agree coca-cola and pepsi is a worse development, since syria already had their own colas which were just as good. even worse will be when starbucks arrives, though...

and you know that since arabs especially syrians are so obsessed with americanization that they'll be lining up for KFC. so sad. although i do recall eating fried chicken in '99 but it was called "prosted?" or something like that... shrug.

walked by today and it wasn't too busy, surprisingly... and (if you don't know abu romani) it is in the most affluent, westernized neighborhood in damascus...

i think libya maybe the last stronghold... atleast, i wouldn't expect to see coca-cola or pepsi or kfc there. maybe i'm wrong, haven't been yet.
