I'm planning to head over to Lebanon once there is some sort of ceasefire called or a safe way in. The border from Damascus to Beirut is still closed, and the road completely fucked up anyway. The Homs to Baalbek road is the same story, I believe. I read the bridge south of Hermel leading to Baalbek was destroyed, and they've been bombing the Bekka ( Read more... )

That's a good plan. I wish I could do something to help. I have no applicable skills, mind you.

That's really great, Daniel.

I'm seriously considering taking a gap year between my Masters and PhD to go to Lebanon. I would leave right at this minute, except that I'm halfway through my MSc and my supervisor and my parents would kill me :P Plus I'm having enough trouble getting my project to really take off, and delaying my Masters a year would only make it harder for me to finish.

It's in cases like these I really wish I opted to go to med school instead. Like sabotabby, I don't have much applicable skills :/

Yeah, having such commitments definitely makes it harder... though from what I'm hearing from friends in Beirut it sounds like they'll need all the help they can get, regardless of skills. A friend of mine working with displaced people in Beirut says they have a bunch of foreigners helping out there who don't even speak any Arabic...

i see you don't have cedarseed on your flist. she's an artist living in beirut who is trying to leave; it might be useful to compare notes about the beirut-damascus route.

Well, the route to Syria along the coast via Tripoli *was* clear. I just read they bombed a bridge between Tripoli and the border this morning. I'm sure there are side roads that can be taken, but I imagine they could be bombed at any time, too... better to sit it out for now, I think.

i really wish i could be there..
i was supposed to go this month, visit my family for a couple weeks, but there's no way that'll happen anytime soon.
and after that - my job is a steady commitment. i just don't know. i miss it and my heart's aching for my country and i don't know what to do.
